Trying to Get Statement 1 Men to
Kepudi! Pledge.
The Portland Journal of Aug. 11
says:
Senator Charles W. Fulton. In hU
race for re-election to the t'nited
States senate and his desire to defeat
the will of the people of Oregon and
the ratification of the election of
Governor Chamberlain, expects seven
Statement No. 1 members of the leg
islature to prostitute their pledgee
and go into a Joint caucus on the
United Stales senatorship. That li
the ultimate aim of all his plotting.
Senator Fulton wants a Joint cau
cus of the members of the legislat
ure, every one of whom will pledge
himself before going in to abide by
the will of the caucus as regards tbe
election of a United Slates senator.
Incidentally he expects to be that
nominee, but he Is not saying that
tc those whom he wishes to go in
to the conclave. All efforts to con
trol the organization of the legisla

the party machinery of the slate by
tbe deposition of William M. Cake
from the chairmanship of the re
publican state central committee, l
subordinate to the effort to secure
the 4t members of the legislature for
tbe senatorial caucus.
Agrvr to Caucun.
Fulton agents are now busy sound
Ing the different members of th
legislature regarding the tolnt

the a ltl-StaCement No. 1 member ot
the legislature has been seen au.l it
is said that all of them have agreed
to go Into such a caucus.
Effurl is now being turned to

The examination of the timbered

interests and timber owners as th
basis of a dfcmand for further protec
tion from the state government and

preventing the spread of forest fires
It is claimed that the greatest
wealth of Oregon and Washington li
on their pine-clad hills, in the tree
which have required hundreds of
years to mature. In the morning
they stand there representing the
wealth of an Individual, or a com
nany. and the field of employment
which suports a community. In the
evening there is only a blackened
waste desn, ate homes and despair
n asset of the state has been negll
zently allowed to disappear. Wair-thf-ds
are injured, and as a seqi.ei
cities, towns, farmers and grazer
suffer.
There are about 350 deputy fire
wardens in Oregon. If these men
were under salary and doing patrol
duty during June. July. August and
September of each year. It would
mean the saving of much vali.anle
timber. It is contended that if the
cost were apportioned between th
tate and counties It would not ,irote
burdensome.
