Protests Ordered Ketluctiun lu Kate
on Oregon Lumber.
SAN FRAN'CISCO, July 23. Dia
HatHHt'd with the reduction lu lum
ber rates from the Wlllatnette Val
ley lu Oregon to San Francisco and
adjacent points, ordered by the In
terstate commerce commiMiloii, Hur
riniau la preparing today to fight the
decision ill the federal court.
On complaint of the Western Ore
gon Lumber Manufacturers' associa
tion, the lnterestate commerce com
mission recently decided that the
Hill and Harrlman roads must make
sweeping reductions in overland
rates on lumber shipments from
Pacific coast points to many eastern
cities.
At the same time the tariff sched
ule on Oregon-California shipments
was cut. it is to this reduction that
Hurriman oh.'.?cta.
Before the Harrlman roads adopt
ed their new schedule, a year and a
half ago, $.1.10 a ton was charged fiy
the Southern Pacific on I inn her ship
ped to San Francisco from points on
the east vide of the Willamette Val
ley. Shipments from the' west side
of the valley were accepted at $3.3.'
a ton, tho difference being caused
by tho longer haul, via Corvallls and
Albany.
When the new schedule was adopt
ed the rate was advanced to $r from
either Bide of tho valley.
Because the complaint against this
Increase was considered well found
ed, the commission ordered that tho
rate be reduced to $3. 40 from the
east side points and $3.C.r from west
side points.
Although this Is 30 cents a ton
higher than the old rate the rnllronn
objects to any reduction In the new
flat rate and the case will be carried
Into the federal courtB.

One of the most Important con
ventions to bo held In Oregon this
year will be a good roads affair, to
be held lu Portland, on Tuesdny,
August Uth. This Is something
that should bo promoted. Tho spirit
of good roads Is abroad, nnd It
should be kept on the go. Good
roads are the making of a state, and
much of Oregon's future depends up
on the manner In which our roods
are Improved. Every good rond adds
wonderfully to the price of every nr
tlcle produced, and Is as tilg a thing
to the railroad as to the producer.
It helps the market city and the
farmer alike. It hits everybody In
the right sKit.
The Roseburg Commercial Club
nnd the County Court are each urg
ed to name delegates to attend that
meeting. Good roads are a prime
necessity and no effort should be
spared in acquiring them as quickly
as possible. The County Court will
name such delegates tomorrow.

We hope fcnd believe that William
Jennings Bryan will be the next
president of the United States At
this juncture a man Is wante:! in
the While House who will pursu"
corruption In high places with un
abated zeal. The good work that
KuoHevelt has oHleially started must
not be permitted to lag. Mr. Taft i
a gentleman of culture and a man of
Integrity, but he is not of the culllm
to carry on the war that the presi
dent Is engaged In. He lacks ag
pressive force to a marked degree.
His good nature and kindly feeling
would flinch at the turmoil a con
tinuance of the Bryan-Roosevelt, anti-graft
policies would entail. In
Bryan the country would have a man
who from the .start to the finish
would wage a relentless war against
the predatory Interests-. The ques
tion Is not one of partisan policies. It
is one broader than any party affect
ing tho common good. It is time for
all loyal citizens to Hue up behind
the man most likely to best serve
the public welfare. And that man Is
Bryan.
