land. Bnid yesterday that great pre
parations were made at Coos Hay for
the deer season opening. Most of
the sportsmen of that place were pre
paring to visit the foot hi lis near the
Douglas county lino, where door
were reported plentiful. The present
period of the open season precludes
tho killing of does. Any sportsman
caught with the carcass of a doe is
liable to prosecution, and the game
wardens, under Warden 11. O. Stev

The killing of several elk hi the
vicinity of Hoseburg rocently, has
stirred the state olllclals to renewed
activity, for elk aro protected by law
at all seasons of the year, and the
deputy wardens aro anxious to make
an example of some game hog.
