UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu
gene, Juno 27. The V esteru Fed
eration of Teachers' assoclallou will
endeavor to change the manner of
taxation In the state of Oregon from
the iucul tax which now Is provided
in some districts to some form of a
generul slute tux. Recommendation
along thre lines ot-the iinance com
mittee were lopted yesterday, at,
follows:
That Independent districts should
uot be utilized any more for the unit
of taxation; that a statu plan is
much -'better; tbut every child In the
statu should have ut leant six
months' schooling; that n committee
should be uppolhted to put the tindc
lugs before the people through tbe
press.
TIlO argument against the district
tux In the report Is the uneiiual tax
ation. For example. In Lane county
utte district htfs assessable property
amounting to 4:1000, while anotner
lias assessable jrfolrty umolllltlug to
12110,000. The mictiKer showed thut
scarcely lialf of the rural schools of
the stute of Oregon use local ttxes
to run their districts, and that as a
result 20 per cent of the total dis
tricts in th4 stele have only four
months' school, effecting between
000 and 10,(100 Oregon children.
