NOMINATION OK TAFT.
Kiiilowing 1b the leading editorial
iiTFrMn's Oregonluii, and Is given
herewith ha a republican view of
!l-ie nomination of Mr. Tuft for the
presidency:
Air. Taft la nominated, and hie
platform Ib before the country. He
la a man of good ability and sound
judgment, and If elected the govern
ment will bo In safe and conserva
tive hands. But we regard hlB elec
tion as, very problematical, since the
public mind is much agitated and dia
turbed, and the affairs of today pre
sent no great or even distinct prin
ciple on which earnest appeal may
be made. There is much discontent,
no end of loose thought and unde
fined desire, and many who cnuAt
think out anything clearly are ready
to give their voteH simply for a'
"change."
In Buch a situation Mr. liryan is
an Ideal candidate. He lins a power
of making appeal to imaginations
that never can he fulfilled; he is
sentimental and erratic, and never
thinks closely enough on anything to
give trouble or fatigue to the minds
of his hearers. He is i rapid and
pleasing speaker, and impresses all
who hear him with a sure belief
that he is an amiable, henevolonHind
honest man. His qualities as nn or
ator muke him a campaigner of the
first order. As an apostle- of dis
content he goes far enough to se
cure the support of the general mass
who are dissatisfied with existing
conditions, but don't know how to
nhnng' them, yet not far enough to
fUnrin virv much the business and
t:r 'ft yntfve classes, who are not
Hi c'y t: iw to bo no strenuous In their
opposition to hin as heretofore.
Against Taft ho will bo a more for
midable candidate than he was
against McKinlny; for the ground on
which Hie tremendous argument
i""l:it htm In 18!1, and again In
IPOt), wnn ntndo. Is now wanting.
The ani'inent for Taft will be of
ni ro funeral character, presenting
no ,pntral principle on which to fix
,ii;enMon. Taft will be opposed by
.i'1 fnr nnyrnnHnn. or for no mn-
ion, ny next Noveuioer, will bt
shouting, "Give ub a change!" i
The platform is of little Import
ance. The history of parties, and
the attitude of parties in relation to j
current affairs, as conceived in the!
general mind, Is the actual platform,
no matter what the convention may j
f.ay or declare. It must be said that I
ihe outcome of the contention over
the Injunction or court procedure
plank Is disproportionate to the trou
ble taken in pressing it upon the
convention. The declaration Ik a
reasonable one indeed; but it does
not go far enough to meet the wishes
of those whom it is designed to
satisfy, for U falls far below the
Gnmpers demand. It will not bring
organized labor to the support of
Mr. Taft; for the larger portion of
It was pure to be against him. In any
event. Mr. Bryan 1h and always have
been lis special attraction.
Of the platform It must he said,
hrweer, that it Is a comprehensive
document, Rrnoothly and gracefully
written; It Is long three columns
agate; and it touches nearly all mat
ters of current political Interest
Hut platforms, In ordinary times,
like these, are little read. I'ooplc
move with the current of events, and
will make up their mljyls by Novem
ber what Taft stands for on one side
and Bryan onQho other.
