Ai.ieiiirui. aro coming to be
buuu.eU 01 the way In which th'.-y
ic.coiuie the Fourth of July. Ever)
consideration of safety, good taste
and sincere patriotism is hostile to
the din and dangor which signalize
what ought to be a sacred anniver
sary. On the last five Independence days
more than eleven hundred person
were killed, and the maimed and
blinded outnumber the army that
Washington brought through the
terrible winter at Valley Forge, the
army that created Independence
Day. We deliberately burn our mil
lions of dollars worth of explosives
fur the sole purpose of muklng noise,
this does not Include evening fire
works, which are Justified by their
beauty, and we burn up millions
more In accidental fires.
Our glorious Fourth is a day of
anxiety and labor for our fire depart
ments, police departments, hospitals,
surgeons, nurBes, projerty-owners
and parent. And all for what?
Not surely, to express spontaneous
y in the fact that our country was
born, and not to honor tho memory
of the men who made the nation.
The men who prayed nt Cambridge
Common before marching to battle
would not feel honored by a cere
mony which burns down a house,
blinds a child, and robs a working
man of tho hand by which he sup
ports himself.
Mrs. Isaac L. Illce, in an article
In the Century Magazine, makes a
plea for a sane Fourth. Hand con
certs, illuminations, evening .display
of Aroworka, conducted by experien
ced men, out-door sports, picnics and
singing of national songB, tho ringing
of bells, patriotic addresHes, Hag
raisings, the reading aloud In every
household of the Declaration of In
dependence these are abundant oc
cupations of a gruvo and gny nature
to fill the day.
One suggestion tho Companion
earnestly makes to parents. It the
children must hnvo tliotr firecrackers
and other Instruments of torture, let
the adult play with the children ami
keep a watchful eye on their dan
gerous fun.

Modern Woodmen of America Meet
In I'eorla, Illinois.
PRORIA. III., June 10. An un
equivocal stand for a readjustment
of rates Is taken by Head Clerk C.
W. Hawes of the Modern Woodmen
of America. In his report presented
at the firtenth head camp session of
the order, convened hero this morn
ing. Ten possible plans are sugges
ted, and It Is expected that before the ,
heod camp adjourns next Saturday,
arrangements will be made to hold
another session within the year, to
be devoted exclusively to the rate
question.
The BesBlon was called to order
this morning by Head Consul A. i"
Talbot, the president of the society.
There are 034 delegates and head
ollleers, representing all parts of the
country, sitting In the convention.
On Thursday a big parade will be
held, which Is expected lo uttract
50,000 visitors. Tho national en
campment of the degree tennis is
also In session here, with 5,000 For
esters In attendance.
Accordng to the report of Head
Consul Hawes, submitted loday, the
present membership Is 920,1711, with
12.0H9 locnl lodges. The Insurance
In force aggregates $1,4:10,088,000.

The report shows that during the

totalled ltd. 400, the death rate at

Is very favorable, as the National

1000.
At the society's present rales. wllhCD

Pacific locomotive 2196, was In a
hurry to reach the roundhouse this ,
Liornlng at 7:40, and started his 65- 1
ton toy out of the I'nlon depot yards
at a lively clip. It happened that
Knineor Frank Wilhelm and F'rc- !

Terminal switch engine No. 7, were ;
j'ift corning out of the cinder pit
with a ilat loaded with cinders. The 1
two came together with a crash, j
Eoth le-'.dtrs were thrown off the'
track, the rails were torn out of
place and the terminal semaphores
were put entirely to the bad.
The accident took place right
where the main track from the steel
bridge enters the depot yard and ;
crosses the switches from the round
house, so that all passenger trains
entering the I'nlon depot had to
switch out and In through the freight
yards and enter the depot from the
west end, over the Northern Pacific
acks.
it took a crew of 40 men and two
foremen of yards one from tho
Southern Pacific and another from
he Terminal a couple of hours to
m't nit lucumouves uacs. on me '
track. No. 2196 had a big dent In .
ihb tender, and her footbonrd was!
smashed to spinters. while all four
trucks of the tender wero knocked:
otf the track. No. 7 didn't escape bo
easily. Her tender had nearly
crossed the main track when it was
strufk by the Southern Pacific loco-

tank, her rail broken and her tend-i
er forced Into a shallow dltoh. The
wrecking crew got 2196 hack upon
the track by using Jacks and Jumpers
hut It took half a cord of slahwood
piled under the wheels of the tender
and a helper engine tugging away
at the end of a steel cable to pull
No. 7 back to where she belonged.
Uoth engines were sent to the shops.
