Through the medium of a resolution introduced at a meeting of the board of trade last night by Judge Sot.eja Smith and unani mously adopted, Senator Mitchell and Congressmen Williamson and Hermann were requested to resign as representa tives of the state of Oregon at the Na tional Capitol. The resolutions, it was stated, were Introduced in the best in terest of Oregon, and It was the sense of the meeting that the three men should retire because they could not perform the duties of the olllces to which they had been elected. The committee on rivers and harbors made a report dealing with the manner in which work should be carried on to secure needed appropriations for the improvement of the Columbia, and it was recommended that a representa tive citizen be sent to Washington to co-operate with Senator Fulton in urg ing aid from congress. The report was adopted, aod in a few days President Allen will name the commissioner. . The board expressed Itself in favor of a belt road aloug the water front so that all lines might be given entrance to the city, and a committee will bo named inquire into the feasibility of the proposal. She was the last to leave Nome, bringing W. B. Hastings, of Seattle, and W. W. Ward, of Victoria, as passengers, the former in charge of the treasure brought down, umountlng to 9181,000, which goes on to Seattle. Reports brought state that Nome cleared up (6,000,000 this year. The Leelanaw had a good voyage, no ice interforiug. A col lision occurred on the Delaware, Lack awanna & Western road at 11:40 o'clock this morning near Retreat, several miles below this city, between a passenger and freight. Ten persons were killed and 10 injured. The engineers and firemen of both trains are dead as are . also others of the tram men. Both engines were twisted into scrap iron and the passen gers engine blew up after the collision. Man's Unreasonableness is often as great as woman's. But Thos. S. Justice Dick ey, of the supreme court, this after noon ordered Election Commissioner Voorheis to receive the ballots as cast at Tuesday's election and Voorheis says he will obey the order. AH classes of citizens unite in urging Hearst to prosecute the election frauds with all possible vigor. HEARST WILL CONTEST. New York, Nov. 8. It was an nounced at the Hearst headquarters today that the contest over the office of Mayor would be taken at once to (he courts over the heads of the Board of County Canyassers. It was also said that evidence had been secured upon which about 1000 election ofllcers could be sent to prison, and that at least 30, 000 Hearst followers, when they weot to the polls found their names bad been voted on by others. District Attorney Jerome announced today that he will do all he can to see that there is a fair count of the vote for Mayor. He gave orders to his assist ants that the returns from the Ejght eeuth and Sixteenth Assembly Districts be guarded carefully. Tammany leader Charles P. Murphy is leaderof the Sixteenth' District.. 'Mr. Jerome said: "Take these 'returns from the Eighteenth and Sixteenth Districts and lock them up. Guard them carefully. They may cut a big figure in this count. I propose to see that there is a fair count in this Mayoralty contest, no matter whom it hurts." DEMOCRACT WINS IN QUAKER STATE Philadelphia, Nov. 8. Incomplete returns from various parts of the state Indicate the election of Berry, demo crat, for state treasurer, by a large plurality. Republican counties show enormous republican losses. Berry, nominated as a democrat, was indorsed by the independent Republi- cans and the prohibitionists. In this city the Lincoln party, formed by the Independent republicans, gave Berry a tremendous vote. The state treasury haB been under republican control since 1880. The republican plurality last yeur was 504, 000. City Chairman Edmonds tonight sent the following telegram to President Roosevelt: "Philadelphia has risen to Its oppor tunity and stands redeemed. The prin ciple of honesty In government so fre quently espoused by you has won an overwhelming triumph. Our majority approximates 75,000." To Secretary Root the following was telegraph: "The masquerade lsover. The crim inal and corrupt combination has been driven frpm power by the righteous indignation of a great Republican party. We have only begun. Our thanks to you for your splendid aid." IN OTHER STATES. Utah At 6alt Lake the American party (anti-Mormon) defeated the Mor mon democrat and republican candi date for Mayor. Ogden elected a democratic mayor by 257 majority over a republican who had the support of the three papers of the city and who was confidently expected to win. Virginia The Democratic plurality is about 20,000, and -Swanwn Ib elected Governor. Negroes generally remained away from the polls. The next Legis lature on joint ballot will have 23 Re publicans instead of 16, as at present. New Jersey Republican gains in legislature sufficient to preclude any democratic successor to United States Senator Dryden. Reformors elect Ev erett Colby, Independent republican, to state senate in Essex county. Nebraska Republicans elected state supreme jude. Rhode Island A clean sweep for the whole republlrjq stats ticket, beaded TO by Governor Utter, with a plurality of over 7000, the largest for several years, and a legislature with the republicans in overwhelming preponderance, sum marizes the result. Indiana Returns from 56 cities indi cate that the republicans were victori ous in twenty-six, the democrats in twenty, and the citizens' organizations in ten. Cleveland, Ohio Tom Johnson, den- -ocrat, re-elected mayor by 12,000 plu rality. With one exception, domoorats make a olean sweep of all city and county candidates. Chicago, 111. Republicans made a clean sweep of the election in Chicago and Cook county today, electing all of their candidates with the exception of one man. The sole democrat to reach the promised land was Webb, a candi date for trustee of the sanitary district. The socialist vote totalled about 20, 000, Eouisvllle, Ky. Democrats elected a mayor and legislature remains practi cally unchanged, with a good working democratic majority. Sacramento, Calif. M. R. Mutinous troops are pillaging the city and Bring in the streets. The inhabitants aie fleeing for their lives. Machine guns were turned against the mutineers by loyal troops and a battle followed In which many on both sides were killed. Many buildings were ignited and part of the town is threatened with destruction. Tho flames are plainly visible from the Czar's palace at Petorhof. General Mana ger J. P. O'Brien, of the Harriman lines, yesterday gave out oiticial infor mation concerning the expenditures authorized for 1905 and 1900 for con struction of new lines and improve ments of the O. R. & N. and Southern Pacillc Oregon lines. It is shown by this statement that $4,100,000 has been set aside for building a new line, the mileage and location of whicb has not been made public. This Is believed to be the projected Eastern Oregon, to bo built from a connection at Natron through Central Oregon to Ontario, and with a branch to Klamath Falls, which, In connection with the road from Weed, will form a new through route between Portland and San Frau cisco. It will be neces sary to have the names of 7489 legal voters signed to a petition to empower Secretary of State Dunbar to submit any measure to a vote of the people at the June election. This is 8 per cent of the legal voters as shown by the vote cast at the last general election for state ofllcors. Mrs.' Hannah Yocubots, aged 311 years, residing near Crabtree, Or., committed suicide Tues day by shooting herself with a revolver. Before committing the act, she gave her youngest child, a girl of 3 years of age, a dose of strychnine, but tho child's life was saved by prompt medi cal aid.
