Stetson and wife, of Illinois, are here visiting the latter'B brother, C. E. Hasard, and family. They visited the fair at Portland on their way out ,'kere. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Shaw and wife, ,of Missouri, are .here visiting the latter's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and. Mrs. M. R. Ryan. They will also -visit another sistor at Myrtle Point in Coos county, after a week here, after which they will goon to Portland to visit the fair. Mrs. Ryan will ac company them on the first trip and both Mr. and Mrs. liyan will go on tho vlBft to the fair. Frank Kent and Merritt Spalding re turned home Monday from a month's stay in the mountains on the middle fork of the Willamette, where Mr. Kent is pasturing a drove of about a hundred huud of cattle on the reserve. Miss Lulu MoCallistor and brother, "Was," came up from their home at Portland the fore part of the week and went down to their homesteads near Klkton on Wednesday for a few weeks' stay. Irving Conway came up Monday from Portland, where he resides with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hart, and went down Elk Creek to visit, the old home plueo. J. L. Cowan and Bon, "Gus," came up from Gardiner Monday and went to Portland tho following day to see the fair. Mrs. Cowan has been in Port land for some time. Mrs. H. a. McUlaran has gone to Portland to reside Indefinitely. Mrs. Charles Bobin went to Hubbard Tuesday to visit relatives and friends, and will probably visit the fair boforo returning home. Mr. E. M. Durfee, secretary and treasurer of the Mexican Lumber Co., ' of the City of Mexico, Is here on a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. R Durfee; On his return home hi mother will accompany him as far as Ban Francisco, where she will visit a sister. Mr. John P. Durfee and bride, nee Miss Denote Whipple, roturned homo Wednesday morning from their wedding trip to Portland aud the fair. During the year 1004 the Massachu setts highway commission completed about sixty-six miles of state road, bringing the total mileage of complet ed state highways up to 548 mllea, with eighteen miles laid out, but not finished, says tho Good Roads Maga zine. The average cost per mile of road for the sections completed during the year lt04 was $5,750.44, and the extremes were 1,797.38 and $13,200.32. The cost of maintenance and repairs on the state roads completed prior to 1004 shows an expenditure during that year of $43.31 per mile. The Chinese Foreign Board has ordered the Vice joy of Nankin? to make every effort to suppress the boycott which has now been extended to English goods, im ported, it is supposed, by an American firm.
