Portland Chinese Will Raise Ten Thousand Dollars. ' PoHTtiAND, Aup. 15. Ten thousand dollars will be raised by the Chinese of Portland to aid in the boycott in China against American goods going Into that country. Two meetings of the local colony has been held at one of the joss houses, with large attendance, and keen enthusiasm was Bhown. It was decided that each Chinese in Portland should contribute at least $2, but higher sums will be accepted. Al ready subscription lists have been cir culated and they are meeting with good success. The work of collecting money to aid In the boycott is being conducted by ollicials at San Francisco. The move ment in Portland waB started by re ceiving a communication from there. "We want a free trade of people be tween China and Amorica, the same as you have with other nations," said a local Chlneso merchant today. "We itre only a small colony to aid In this matter. Evory Chinaman in the world has been asked to put up $2. Some of the wealthier class will give more. At home lecturors are sent out to explain the matter to the people. Of Interest to Sick People. Ayers Death of Mrs. L. M. Parrott. Mrs. MaryC. Parrott, wife of L. M. Parrott, died at ber home in North Rose burg1, this morning, Aug. 16, 1905, after an illness of several months. Spinal meningitis was the cause of ber death. Mrs. Parrott was 61 years of age. She had been in poor health all summer, but not until Friday was she taken seriously ill. From that day she steadily declined until the end. Mrs. Parrott had been a resident of Rose burg )for 17 years. She was a most estimable lady, a devout Chris tian and enjoyed the acquaintance of a large portion of the community, to whom her death will come as a painful shock. Surviving Mrs. Parrott are her hus band and four children: Mrs. Ethel Carlyle, of this city; J. W, Parrott, of Gevservllle, Calif., and Mrs. N. N. Chapman and Miss Eurodora Parrott, of Colorado; also one brother, J. J. Bellis, of Missouri, and two sisters, Mrs. M. Leek, of Missouri, and Mrs. S. Woodruff, of Santa Fe, N. M. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Presbyterian church in this city, of which Mrs. Parrott was a member. Services will be conducted by Revs. J. A. Town bend and E. Deve lEn, a railway engineer, was brought here last evening in custody ot Sheriff T. L. Steele, of Cattaraugus county, New York, and Jesse einow, deputy sheriff of Baker county. Develin is wanted at the first named county for murder, committed In the town of Olean, on the line between New York and Pennsylvania. He, in company with his fireman, while taking In the sights of the town, became involved in a quarrel with a stranger, and the two beat the latter so severely that he died. The crime was committed about two months ago, and Develin lied West to avoid arrest. He was finally traced to one of the construction camps along the line of the Bumpier Valley Rail way extension, bevond Tipton, and the two 0 Ulcers Becut-ed their man p.t the point mentioned, yesterday afternoon.
