'Weyerbaenser Syndicate Negotiating for
Big Klamath Tract.
San Francisco, Aug. 10. Freder
ick Weyerhaeuser, of Minneapolis,
known throughout the country as the
. Rockefeller of the timber world, is ne
gotiating for a vast tract of valuable
timber situated in Northern California
'and Southern Oregon. Two of Weyer
haeuser's representatives, R. L. Mc
Cormick, of Tacoma, who is treasurer
of the big Minneapolis lumber com
pany, in which he owns a large block
of stock, and George S. Long, Pacific
Coast manager ol the conoern, have
been at the Palace Hotel for several
days conferring with Hervey Lindley,
of Klamathon; George Mason, of Los
Angeles, and others who are interested
in various portions of the timber tract
that Weyerhaeuser is after..
In all Weyerhaeuser has under con
sideration between 45,000 and 50,000
acres, which are said to oontain one of
the most valuable traots of white and
sugar pine in California and Oregon.
Timber cruisers have already made a
thorough investigation of the property
wanted by Weyerhaeuser and have re
ported in favor at a satisfactory price
for the land and it is in connection with
'this detail of the negotiation that rep
resentatives of Frederick Weyer
haeuser came to this city.
Included in the tract is the property
of the Klamath Lake Railroad Com
pany, of which Hervey Lindley is pres
ident, and wbioh owni 30 miles of Hae
extending from Pokegama, Or., south
ward to Laird, where it connects with
the Southern Pacific Company. It is
proposed to make this railroad part of
the big deal.

Mrs. M. W. Hurd fell and broke her
arm a few days ago at Ocean Park,
Calif. Many Oakland friends regret to
hear of the misfortune of this lady.

man, was in town Wednesday morn
ing. He is building a new mill, 24x72
feet, with a dally capacity of 15,CD0

Missouri, and Mrs. Mary I. Qualte, of
Cleveland, Missouri, are visiting their
sister, Mrs. C. Adams, near Kellogg.
Miss Tlllle Longworth, of Peru, Illi
nois, Is the guest of her cousin, Z. L.
Dimmlck, and other Oakland relatives.
Dr. J. C. Copestake, a retired physi
cian, of Ames, Iowa, is the guest of
Hon. and Mrs. J. T. Bloomtield. The
doctor 1b a cousin of Mrs. Blpomfield.
E. H. Pinkston, Roy Stearns, C. A.
McNabb and W. A. McCarty started
overland to Coos county yesterday
morning. They will return in about
30 days with several hundred sheep.
J. E. Roberts, of Aberdeen, has pur
chased Sanford Hart's farm near
Wilbur and taken possession of the
Bame. Consideration, $1,300.
C. A. McNabb threshed nearly 4,000
bushels of wheat and oats from ISO
acres on the Fendel Sutherlin farm on
the Swale. Other crops not reported
near Oakland are nearly if not quite as
good.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Moore, Mr. and
Mrs. Blythe Baker and Mrs. Sarah
Nelson, of Lynn county, Missouri, are
.visiting relatives and friends in and
near Oakland. Mr. Moore is a son of
Uncle Billy Moore, of Old Oakland.
It has been 30 years since father and
son met until a few days ago. ,
MARRIED
A very pretty wedding was solemn
ized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rob
ert Powell Thursday evening, when
their daughter, Miss Lizzie Powell,
and Harry Stearns were united In mar
riage by Rev. J. W. Stockton. Only a
few relatives and intimate friends were
present. Mr. and Mrs. Stearns started
to Portland on the midnight overland,
where they will remain a few days and
then go to Yoncalla, their future home.
Mr. Stearns is manager of Stearns &
Chenoweth'a branch store at Yoncalla,
and a very worthy young businessman.
His bride la a most estimable young

. yUTSMOUTH, N. H., Aug. 12.
The peace conference reconvened this
morning and the Russian envoys sub
mitted their reply to the Japanese
proposals, in writing. An adjourn
ment was then taken to allow the Jap
anese envoys to consider the reply.
While practically nothing is known
of the tenor of the Russian envoys' re
ply, there is well founded belief that
the chances for an agreement are very
poor. The general opinion is that
peace negotiations will be discontinued
soon, so pessimistic is the prevailing
feeling.
RDSSIA HAS NO HOPE OP PEACE.
St. Petersburg, Aug. 12. It Is
now clear that the Japanese ( demands
are too great for acceptance by Russia,
and almost all hope of the envoys ar
riving at a peace agreement has been
abandoned.

automobile race here today, Earl Klser,
of national fame, sustained the loss of a
leg, which was literally torn off by his
machine colliding with a fence.

The directors of the Water Users'
association at a special meeting with
the reclamation engineers definitely
decided that as soon as 70 per cent of
the excess holdings, that iB the amount
over 160 aores held by any one person,
is signed over to the government,
agreeing that if the owner cannot or
does not sell the excess by the time
water is ready to be turned , on, the
government or Water UBers' associ
ation be empowered to sell it for them,
work will be commenced.

Wilson, an attorney of Portland, repre
senting the telephone company which
Is installing the automatic system in
that city, has been in Eugene the past
few days, making a preliminary can
vas among the citizens to find out what

position system here. He has received
many assurances that a second system
would receive a large patronage.

(McCormick Is remembered In Rose
burg by reason of having appeared
here several weeks ago with John L.
Sullivan as the ex-cbampion's spurring
partner. He was heralded then as the
coming premier of the "heavies.")

Negro Burned at Stake.
Sulphur Springs, Tex., Aug. 11.
In the public courthouse square,
chained to a stake and surrounded by
an Immense crowd of excited Texans,
James Williams, negro, was burned at
the stake today. Officers made Utile
attempt to save him from the mob
Williams attempted a criminal assault
on the 14-year-old daughter of a widow
living near Sulphur Springs.

The president in his address'Qrst re
ferred to tho Monroe Doctrine, which,
while not a part of international law,
forbids the territorial encroachment of
non-American powers on American
soil. Its purpose is partly to secure
this nation against seeing great mili
tary powers obtain new footholds in
the western hemisphere, and partly to
seoure to our fellow-republics south of
us the ohance to develop along their
own lines without being oppressed or
conquered jby non-American powers.
Yet it must be understood that undor
no circumstances will the United States
use the Monroe dootrine as a cloak for
territorial aggression on our own part.
Referring to the recent Indictments
of members of the beef trust and re
commending further legislation he
said!
"Very many of these men seem to
think that the alternative 1b simply
between submitting to the mild kind
of governmental oontrol we advocate
and the absolute freedom to no what
ever they think best. - - They are great
ly in error. Either they will havo to
submit to reasonable supervison and
regulation by the national authorities,
or else they will autlmately have to
submit to governmental action of far
more drastic type.
But In the end, and in may judgement
at a time not very far oiT, we shall
have to, or at leaBt we shall find that
we ought to, take further action as re
gards all corporations doing interstate
business. The enormous inci'oase in
interstate trade, resulting from the In
dustrial development of the last quar
ter of a century, makes it proper that
the federal government Bhould, bo far
as may be necessary to carry into effect
its national policy, assume a degree of
administrative control of these great
corporations."

Grants Pass Brewery Burned
Gbants Pass, Or., Aug. 11. The
brewery and Ice plant of the Kaglu
Brewing Company, of this city, wblcb
was completed but a few months ago,
were totally destroyed by fire early
yesterday morning. Being beyond the
fire limits and out of reach of hjdranis
or fire plugs, nothing could be done to
check the llaroes, and the large build
ing and entire plant were burned, en-,
tailing a loss of between $6000 and (800O.
The fire Is supposed to have origi
nated in the boiler-room of tho plant.

Benson Offers to Furnish Evidence
Against Jtchell.
8an Francisco, Aug. 11. John A.
Bonson, the Indicted land speculator,
Is said to stnnd ready to supply the
land-fraud evidence to the government
on coudition that the charges against
him are dropped. Benson is alleged to
have offered to furnish Secret Service
Agent Burns with damaging evidence
against Senator Mitchell and to testify
against Hyde and other CallfornlanB.
The oiler Is under consideration at
Washington. Benson is regarded as
the ringleader In the California land
fraud cases, and the evidence is con
sidered sufficiently strong to convict
him. Francis J. Honey admits Benson
has letters Implicating Senator Mitoh
ell, but says the prosecution does sot
need them. He Bald:
"Court proceedings have already re
vealed plainly that Benson and his
associates fraudulently obtained 120,000
acres of school land. We do not need
his help."
