Cannon's store, in this city, Wednesday night, was giv en a preliminary- examination before Justice Long this morning and, as a re suit, was held to appear before the cir cuit court for trial. Criticisms were made that while the colored man's cooking might bo of a superior quality, he was not so cleanly or pains taking as a white man in the travel ing kitchen, Other roads, which at various times haveadopted white cooks, say they have been found satisfactory. Pierce, an all-round would-be bad man, espe dally when under the lntiuence liquor, was yesterday morning pre sented with a tie pass and floated from the city by Recorder W. A. Moores. Pierce was taken in by Marshal Corne lius on Tuesday afternoon and assigned to a call In the city jail. He was in toxicated at the time and had been making himself disagreeable to every one who happened to be near him. His departure is a good riddance to the city, according to tbe opinion of the oflicers. (Pierce served a term in jail at Rose burg for stealing a barber equipment from Glenn Woodruff. After being re leased he went to Eugene, where he was again i idled for vagrancy and drunkenness, his chief characteristics.) Dr. E, V, Hoover returned Thursday night from the headwaters of West Fork, wh re be and Atty. Chas. L Hamilton aad been looking after their mining interests for several days. They have done considerable development work and had a number of assays made. These tests show that the ore has a n average value of $2G per ton, all of which is practically from Burface rock. Tbe Martindale mine on the same ledge, upon which nearly 300 feet of tunnelling has bnen done, has shown values of over $100 per ton. Numerous other claims have been located in the ".a me vicinity andconsiderabledevelop ment work is being done. One mine in that district was bonded a few woekB ago for over $30,000, and Dr. Hoover believes several valuable mines will soon be developed there. Brown, Formerly of Roseburg, Makes Valuable Discovery. j Natural gas ran been discovered on I the farm of T. J. Brown, near Portland. Mr. Brown is a former railroad man of this city and a son-ip-law of M. F, Rapp, a former Roseburg druggist. Concerning the discovery on Mr. Brown's farm, the Portland Journal of Aug. 10, says: Natural gas has been discovered on Johnson creek near Lents Junction, and unless all the signs fail, not only is it there in paying quantities, but there is plenty of oil as well. The discovery was made a couple of days ago by T. J. Brown, on whose place of 11 acres the gas Is, in a peculiar manner. While searching for craw fish along the stream Mr. Brown noticed that oily globules rose to the surface and explode. Mr. Brown held a lighted match to one of these bubbles and It shot up a tiny 11 a mo. The tire rushed to the river mud and blazed for half a minute. The location of the gas along tho stream 1b shurply defined, and 10 feet either Bide of where no bubbles form on the stream's surface not the slight est Indication of gas exfsts. That the surrounding district ib per meated with gas veins Is, however, in dicated by the fact that when the well was dug on the Itrown property, sev eral hundred yards from the stream, a strange odor drovo the workmen from the well and fur u time It was impossi ble to work in the excavation. R. & N. clerk at the Ash-streeti' wharf, is lying in a precarious condi tion here with his windpipe half sev ered and throat and wrist gashed, tbe result of an attempt to commit suicide on a road near Kalama night before last. Duke says ho suddenly drew the razor and slashed himself through an Impulse, but it is thought he has been meditating the doed for 'some time, and, in fact, had been sent 'by Portland friends to the woods to give him an opportunity to got over his, despond ency .
