Japan's Terms Not -Likely to be Made Public, RUSSIA WOULD HAVE IT SO BiMo Said to Want Billion Dollars Indemnity and Vladivostok and Sakhalien. Special to Evening Review. Portsmouth, N. H., Aug. 11. No joint conference of 'the Russian and Japanese peace envoys will be held to day. The Russians are holding a con ference in their own apartments. It is understood that unless an agree .meat is reached with the .Japanese representatives that the terms of Japan will not be made public. The Russian envoys are manifesting a disposition to take the public into their confidence, believing that public opinion would force Japan to modify its demands. On the other' hand, the Japanese are disposed to surround the negotiations in mystery as it is recognized that con cessions to Russia may be necessary to obtain lasting "' peace. In sujh an event, nothing' but embarrassment would follow through explanations to the Mikado's people, who are supposed to have good knowledge of the present demands, i, JAPAN'S TERMS. Portsmouth, N. Eljro Takasugi, professor of English at the Imperial University at Tokio, in an interview after a lengthy conference with Mr. Sato, who had Been the spokes man so far for the Japanese peace commission, said that Japan's terms, in his opinion, would include the im mediate evacuation of Manchuria, the -cession of the Island of Sakhalin and an indemnity of $1,000,000,000. Valdi vostok also will be demanded. The indemnity, Mr. .Takasugi said, might be reduced if peace can be brought . about in no other way. Kelso, Wash., Aug. 10. One of the most destructive forest fires tbat has ever visited the timber sections sur rounding this portion of the state has been in progress and has been devast ing the forests around Coal Creek, the Eastern & Western mills, Fred. Taylor's, mill, Joe Beck's mills and Eufaula camps. The orlgn of the fire has not been AMartalned, but it is thought tbat donkey engines In the woods ignited dry underbrush tbat has ac cumulated this Summer. The woods around Kelso have thick undergrowth, and owing to the hot Summer the growth burns like tinder. Donkey engines and ropes used in con veying logs have been hauled in, and those that are in the dense portions of the woods have been burled. James Finn, of Riddle, the Victim ol An Accident. . James Finn, the young son of Mike Finn, of Riddle, was accidentally shot by B. F. Nichols, at the latter's farm, one mile south of Riddles, this morning. The accident occurred while Mr. Nichols was shooting some quail in a blackberry patch, with a shot gun The injured boy will probably recover, Mr. Nichols had just shot a quail wher'two more birds appeared from the blackberry patch and Hew in oppo- site' directions.. As he turned to shoot 1 the one that flew to his left, young Finn, who was with Mr. Nichols, ran forward unobserved, and nicked up the first bird that had been killed. The boy was immediately car-' rled to Mr. Nichols' house. Dr. Seeley, of this city, was quickly summoned by telephone. He left here at 10 o'clock this morning. A telephone message received from Riddle this afternoon elates that the injured boy is resting easily and that his chances for recovery are good. MARRIED SCHETTER AIKEN. EXPEDITION RESCUED Artie Explorers Had Been Cnt From World Since July, 1903. HonnigsvaaO, Norway, Aug. 10. The Arctio steamer Terra Nova, which went to the relief of the Flala-Zelgler Polar Expedition, has rescued An thony Fiala and all the others con nected with the expedition, with the exception of one Norv ,.in sailor, who died from natural causes. The ship America which took out the expedition, was crushed in the ice early in the Winter of 1903-04, and lost with a large part of her coal and provisions. . The 37 members of the expodltton who returned to safety are all in good health, despite their deprivations and prolonged imprisonment in the Arctic, the expedition having been severed from all communication with the out side world since July, 1003. The Fiala-Zeigler polar expedition reached 73 degrees and 11 minutes. A Warning to Mothers. Too much care cannot be used with small children during the hot weather of the summer months to guard against bowel troubles.
