In building roads the feature of first importance is good drainage. The plenipotentiaries of Kussia, says the Novoe Vremya, are to defend the interest of the white against the yellow races. This sounds well; but neither ' 'Europe nor America will forget that what the Russian plenipotentiaries will defend is the interest, not of the white race, nor of the Russian people, but of half a score of men in St. Petersburg who care fur themselves and nobody else. Oregonian. Today was Coos county day at the Lewis & Clark fair and their building was formally opened to the public. This structure, made possible by the liberal contributions of the citizens of Coos county, is a unique feature of the exposition. It is the only county building on the grounds, and is con structed of one of the most wonderful woods in existence Port Orford cedar whictB peculiar to Coos and adjoin ing counties. All hope the Coos coun ty people will reap a rich reward as a "result of their enterprise. Real Estate Transfers. One Dollar Saved Represents Ten Dollars Earned, The average man does not save to exceed ten -per cent of his earnings. He must spend nine dollars In living expenses for every dollar saved. That being the case he cannot be too care ful about unnecessary expenses. Very often a few cents properly invested, like buying seeds for his garden, will save several dollars outlay later on. It Is the same In buying Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy It costs but a few cents, and a bottle of it in tbe house often saves a doctor's bill of several dollars. Hadley, the special advertis ing agent of San Francisco, began solic iting and placing newspaper advertis ing on a small scale. Naturally conservative be was soon considered a safe man with which to en trust an advertising account and he also made friends among the publish ers. Early in the game he incurred the enmity nl a then powerful coast agency, and it is more than likely that this en mity was a factor in enabling him to es tablish a reputation for fair dealing. In April, 1807, the old agency retired from the field and about this time Mr. Hadley erected his lirst building for the purpose of housing the business he had built up. Witbin the past two months he has been compelled to enlarge the original building to three times its former capacity and now owns the most mod ern advertising agency west of Chi cago. it is interesting to know that 98 per cent of the advertising placed through his ottice goes to dally newspapers. Mr. Hadley is almost an enthusiast over newspaper advertising, as he firmly believes In the value of newspa pers and confines his efforts practically tD this branch of the business- Popular and Picturesque, The only thing necessary tojiiak the Denver and Rio Grande the most popular, as it has ever been known the most pleasant and most picturesque way to cross the continent, has come about.
