General W. W. Dlaekmar, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, died last evening of interstital nephritis. His wlfo was with him during his ill ness. The body will be embalmed and taken to tbe home of the family in Boston. The General arrived here on the 10th on a tour, during which he intended to visit Grand Army posts throughout the Northwest. He was ill when he ar rived and gradually failed. The seri ousness of his condition was kept from the public at the request of his wife. General Blackmar served with dis tinction throughout the war and at Five Forks was promoted on the field by General Custer to tbe rank of cap tain. At the last National encamp ment of the Grand Army of the Re public he was elected commander-in-chief. Indention Cured. Wright & Wilbur, of Union, Or., own ers of the woolen mills In this city, have written to prominent citizens that they intend to begin operating the plant about October 1. Wright & Wilbur purchased the mill early last spring and announced that they would Immediately commence to operate them, but later a deal with the citizens of Hood River was entered into, by which the local plant was to be moved to that place. The deal hung fire for a time and finally fell through. Mean while Ihe plant has remained idle. The news that it Is to be operated is hailed by Eugene people with satisfaction. It will employ between 75 and 100 per sons and create a good local marKet for Lane county wool. Bent Her Double. William Crewe, a resident of Ophlr, a remote Curry County hamlet, may lose his leg as the result of a bullet fired at him by his crazy son, John Crewe, 20 years old. Only a hasty blow from the father, who contrived to knocn the muzzle of the weapon from bis face to the lower portion of the body, saved his life. As it is, a bone half way between knee and hip is shattered. The son's mental derangement is due to Illness. He has been taken to the asylum. A little life may be sacrificed to an hour's delay.
