A statistician remarks that in the last forty years the number of crimi nals In the United States baB grown three times as fast as the population, and today the statistics show that every man out of every 780 is a law breaker. Also that during the past three years as many persons have been murdered in tbe United States 88 the British lost In the entire Boer war, and last year while 8,482 persons met with violent deaths only 111! murderers were executed. A much more rigid enforcement of our criminal laws seems imperative. Treasury Deficit Growing. Washington, July 17. In 12 days of the current fiscal year the treasury deficit is (8,000,000, and It Is still grow ing. For the month It probably will reach 814,000,000, or half as much as it "was for the entire fiscal year 1004. For two years and 12 days the deficit has been: Fiscal year 11)04 $41,000,000 Fiscal year 11)05 24,000,000 Twelve days of fiscal year 1IKMI 8,000,000 Total $73,000,000 In other words, during tbe past two years the treasury has paid out (73, 000,000 more than It received. It was enabled to do this simply from the fact that it had a large balance on hand, and of this balance or surplus, nearly 120,000,000 was In National banks of the country.
