Concerning the Douglas County ex
hibit at the Lewis and Clark fair, the
Portland Telegram of Saturday, July
10, saysi
It was May W; 1905, when Douglas
County decided that it was practicable
and practical to make an exhibit at the
Lewis and Clark Exposition. The
booth was constructed and fully oc
cupied by the time the Exposition
opened. From time to tinn since the
exhibit has been added to, and will be
added to further us time goes on; but
already the county has a fairly com
plete display on band, and Is attracting
the attention of many intending immi
grants, who are now beginning to ar
rive at the Exposition in large num
bers. Douglas space is along the west side
of the Agricultural building, towards
the north end. It is noticeable perhaps
mostofall for tbe variety of theexhiblt.
Nothing is present in large quantities,
but there is grain fn the sheaf that will
rival any In quality of grain or attrac
tiveness of arrangement. Thero arc
the various grasses, native and tame;
fruits of all kinds, either in the raw or
the cannod state; some are green.
Alongside the apples, prunes, peaches,
cherries, berries, one may ilnd bamboo,
floushing as if It came from Japan, and
various curious growths of maple and
climbing plants, indicating a richness
of forestry Burppasscd in few counties.
There are minerals, toogold ores,
copper ores, nickel ores, coal und
others. And mineral water, from the
Boswell Springs, is dispensed free at
tbe booth.
Agricultural, horticultural, minora!,
with a sprinkling of exhibits from tbe
animal kingdom, such as wool and
cattle products, and there is the sura
total of many counties. Not so with
Douglas. It also makes essays in oil
painting, in a varied collection from
the brush of Mrs. B. D. DosweM.
Then, too, there are the curios, not
the least among which Is a chain, with
an Intricate ornamenton the end, every
link separate, and Lhe whole carved
from a single piece of wood by an in
mate of the Veteran's Home at Uose
burg. As it stands now and it Is to be re
membered that it Is not complete as

not the attractions that some other
country exhibits in the building have,
where longer time and more money have
been at the disposal of the men in
charge. But it is already serving its
purpose of attracting inquiries and
visits to the county from intending im
migrants. The collection was largely
made thus far cy D. S. K. Buick, who
Is president of the exhibition com
mission, and is now commissioner in
charge of the exhibit. F. G. Mioelli,
an attorney of Hoseburg, is secretary
of the commission, andT. R.Sheridan,
of the First National Bank, of Rose
burg, is treasurer. This commission
was chosen at a mass meeting, and
joining forces with the Commercial
Club, succeeded . in interesting the
County Court 1c an exhibit at the
