surrounded by a cover of some non
heat conducting material, so that a
sudden rise of temperature affects on!j

In case the temperature rises evenly
the whole apparatus Is affected, and no
warning signal is given. If, however,
the temperature In the room Is sudden
ly raised, as by the outbreak of a fire,
the eLher above tho mercury In the
glass tube, which Is unprotected, evap
orates, and the pressure of the generat
ed vapors causes the mercury to sink

site part.
Both parts of the tube are fitted with
an electric wlro incited into the glass,
so that when the mercury stands equal
ly high In both tubes the electric cur
rent passes through and tho apparatus
remains silent, lint should a move
ment of the mercury take place be
cause of a sudden rise of temperature
the electric circuit, or contact, is im
peded, and any kind of electric alarm
may be sot Into motion at any dis
tance nnd nt as many places ns re
quired. The apparatus also indicates
Impediments and Interruptions of the
electric current. The substances need
no renewal, and the apparatus nets an
Indefinite length of timo.
At one of the demonstrations the
alarm was raised within eight seconds
from the time a small heap of shav
ings was set on fire in the corner of an
ordinary sized room. In this case the
apparatus was fixed near tho ceiling
nt the end of the room opposite that
where the shavings wore burning.
It is calculated that one apparatus
Is needed for an area of 000 to 80

narily used is to put up n block and
tackle, which is always very cumbftr

A Canadian has devised the very use
ful apparatus shown herewith. It Is
designed for the purpose of hoisting

and putting through windows In the
upper stories of buildings large, heavy
and bulky articles. The apparatus is
bo constructed that It can be set to
communicate with the first, second nnd
third stories of tuiildfngs, nnd when
the work Is done It can be quickly tak
en down and compactly put together
for transportation.
One of the chief ml vantages is that
birjie articles can be put through the
window, ns the parts take up little
spnee. A piano could be hoisted with
tittle or no strain to the Instrument,
with no danger of scratches. It would
also do nway with the trouble of get
ting up narrow stairways and passing
around sharp corners. The article to
be hoisted Is placed on the carrier,
which Is raised by the usual rope run
over 'pulleys nnd attached to n roller
turned by n crank. Klcgers could use
this apparatus to advantage, as could
ft Iso pLtno movers or movers of safes.

How Their Use Iinitrcmicil a Lady the
First Time She Saw Them.
A lady who saw forks used for the
first time at a dinner of Henry III. of
France records her "impressions" of
the occasion. Henry had in 1374 been
tendered n magnificent reception in
Venice. At tills entertainment forks
were used. The royal guest observed
them with much interest nnd immedi
ately introduced them to the French
tourt
It seems from the account of tho la
dy, who ha never used them before,
that some others were In tho same pre
dicament. She writes:
"They never touched tho mejit with
their lingers, but with forks, which
they carried to their mouths, bending
their necks and bodies over their plates.
"There were several salads. These
they ntc with forks, for It is not con
sidered proper to touch tho food with
the lingew. However difficult it may
be to manage it, It is thought better to
put tho little forked instrument in the
mouth than the fingers.
"The artichokes, asparagus, pons and
beans were brought. It was n pleasure
to watch them try to eat these with
their forks, for some, who were less
adroit than the others, dropped as
mnny on their plates and on the wny
to the mouth ns they were able to get
to their mouths.
"Afterward a groat silver basin and
pitcher of water wore brought, and
the guests washed their hands though
it seems as if there would not be much
scent of meat nnd grease on thenvfor
they had touched their food only with
those forked instruments."

The Prevalence of
Bright's Disease
"Dr. Loo mis states from clinical ob
servations and from a large number of
autopsies at.Bellevue Hospital, that 90
per cent of men and women, over 40,
suffer from some form of Bright's Dis
ease." Denver Medical Times.
