WHITE LADY SEEN.
Ghost of German Royalty Seen In
Palace.
Huhun, June 20. The historical
white lady, which tradition says
always makes its appearance in the
imperial castle at Charlottenberg on
the eve of some important event in the
Hohenzollern family, is reported to
have been seen a few days before the
marriage of the crown prince. A
sentry first discovered the ghost on one
of tbe castle terraces, and was about to
fire when it vanished.
The incldont was reported next
morning to the emperor, and he ordered
sentries to be placed next night at all
the entrances to the castle, with orders
to fire upon the ghost Instantly if It ap
peared. Shortly after midnight the
ghost reappeared near one of the sen
tries. He was ulmost paralyzed with
fright and, Instead of firing, shouted an
alarm. The whole garrison turned out
and gave cbase. The ghost lea the
soldiers over all the castle, finally
entering the imperial apartments,
where It entered the kaiser's private
study. One soldier followed it, and
when ne entered the study found that
the ghost had vanished.

John Patterson had his foot quite
badly hurt In the logging camp at
Scottsburg, the first of the week.
John Henderson, who has been laid
up for the past week with a severe at
tack of pneumonia, is Improving, ac
cording to last roports.
Joe Henderson, of the life saving sta
tion, has been at Scottsburg since Sun
day, owing to the illness of bis father.
Forest Jones and Herbert Butler, of
Scottsburg, were passengers from Coos
this morning, enroute to Myrtle Creek.
Roscoe Fryer arrived here on Mon
day from San Francisco, where he has
been attending school. He will visit
friends and relatives at Scottsburg.

Oregon News.
At JEugene last Friday, John Bran
ton plead not guilty to the charge of at
tempting to murder John Fletcher at
Cottage Grove last spring. The at
tempt to kill is alleged to have been
committed on the road from Cottage
Grove to Lorane one night last Spring,
when it is alleged the two men were on
their way to the home of Fletcher.
They had stopped to rest and Fletcher
fell asleep. He was suddenly awakened
by a shot from a pistol and an ugly
wound on the side of tbe head, and
says the shot was fired by Branton.
The motive for the alleged crime is
supposed to have been some benefit
which Branton would have received
from insurance on Fletcher's life.
The Rev. Federic E. J. Lloyd, D. D.,
of Union town, Pa., has been elected
Bishop Co-adjutor of the Episcopal
Diocese of Oregon.
At Coquille, Coos County, last week
two saloon men were fined $50 each
and two others $200 for violating the
local option law. Tbe saloon men are
determined to contest the law and
will carry their casesup to the supreme
court.
The famous Swede Basin timber belt
24 miles southwest of Grants Pass, has
been sold to Wisconsin capitalists for
$40,000. The belt comprises about
2000 acres of some of the finest timber,
as well as agricultural land, in Jose
phine County, upon which stands over
70,000,000 feet of best grade sugar pine.
The purchasers are undecided as to
whether they will operate a mill in
the belt this summer, bub they will
operate two large mills in tbe Cow
Creek tract, which they purchased
about a month ago from the Oregon
Pine Lumber Company, -and.wbich has
upon it some 00,000,000 feet of lumber
upon 1700 acres of land.
At the annual sosslon of the Oregon
Grand Lodge in Portland last week,

The question of purchasing ground on
which to erect a Masonic Temple was
left to the board of trustees of tbe
educational fund to report on at tbe
l!)00 session. That, the order is strong
in Oregon is evident from the tenor of
the reports submitted, which showed
there were 109 lodges in the state,
with a total membership of 7500, and
this has increased more shan 50 per
cent during the past five years.
Thirty two new lawyers have been
admitted to the bar by the Oregon
Supreme court.
South Methodists will erect a $25,000
church In Portland this summer.
Because the lower court limited tho
arguments of tho attorneys to only one
hour, which is held to be restrictive,
the Supreme court has granted a new
trial in the case of Oscar Rogoway con
victed of burning a store belonging to
his mother at Lebanon.
Bert Griffon, section foreman for the
O. K, ifc N., was killed by a train near
Arlington, Monday night. It is sup
posed he was trying to board the train
to come to Arliugton and was thrown
off and instantly killed.
