While aroused, the west is making thrilling prepara tions for a practical fight against the Standard Oil Company, to be begun la the state of Kansas, and the battle against corporate corruption and op pression is getting into full swing. The governors of Missouri, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas have invited Thomas W. Lawson to go to their states in Jul; and address the people. Lawson has accepted the invitations. This journey of the crusador against "franzied finance" promises to b) a picturesque and stirring campaign. Preparations to receive Lawson have been made on a large scale. Other anti monopoly speakers of national reputa tion, Governors Folk and La Toilette, and District Attorney Jerome, will make addresses. fortifications on the frontier, and enter into an arbitration treaty with Sweden. The London correspondent of the Novpe Vremya telegraphs that he has learned on excellent authority that the British government has advised Japan against concluding an armistice with Russia. England declares, adds the correspond ent, that Russia Is not sufficiently weakened to treat for peace and that Russia's request for an armistice Is a ruse to gain time. The foregoing dispatch is taken to mean that England desires a decisive defeat of General Llnievitch's army, fearing that otherwise the 400,000 men under his command would be shifted to the borders of Afghanistan for opera tions against the British in India. Mitch ell, charged with complicity In the Oregon land frauds, opened here today. So far the time has been occupied to ward selecting a jury. BEATEN BOTH WAYS. 18-Honr Train Schedule Between Ktw York and Chicago. New York, June 19. With exactly three minutes to spare, and the belief that even quicker time readily can be made if desired, the New York Cen tral's Twentieth Century Limited rolled into the Grand Central at 0:27 A. M. today at the end of her first run on the Chicago-New York 18-hour sched ule. When the train reached Bo Halo, 25 minutes ahead of ber schedule, there remained no necessity for record breaking time, and the flyer came through the remainder of the distance practically on the schodule which has been in use for several years. 51 minutes clipped off. Chicago, June 10. The first west bound trip on an 18-hour basis made by the Twentletb Century Limited oyer the Lake Shore Railroad was finished five minutes ahead of time. The train was due here from New York at 8:30 A. M., and glided into the La Salle street station at 8:25. The train averaged one to five minutes ahead of the schedule all the way. The average running lime for the entire distance was 63 1-3 miles an hour. Outside of Btops, the train occupied 17 hours and nine minutes in making the journey between New York and Chicago. Loucks, of St. Louis, Missouri, organizer for the Na tional Good Roads Association, was in Roseburg today and called a meeting of the local business men ub the oourt house at 3:30 this afternoon. The ob ject Is to arrange for a Good Roads Convention to be held In this city on Thursday, June 20, under the auspices of the National Good Roads Associa tion. Experts in every department of good roads building are with this party, which has just held very success ful conventions at Walla Walla, Pen dleton, Hood River and other points. At the latter place the convention is said by Mr. Loucks to have been the largest and most enthusiastlo he has over seen In a town of the size of Hood River. Following soon after the convention here It is proposed to hold similar meetings at Mcdford, and at various points in the Willamette valley, ending; with a rousing state convention or good roads at Salem. These convene tions are to bo followed next year with. practical demonstrations of good road and street building by the National. Good Roads Train, which carries alL the necessary appliances for doing such, work and handled by experienced oper ators. When the conventions are hold, mem bers of the National Association go out over the adjacent roads, examine their needs and the quality of the materials, available for their improvement and give instructions as to how the im provement should be made and estl mate Its probable cost. Sam Hilde-, brand, tho notorious outlaw, who opor- ated in Missouri, Texas and Arkansas half a oentury ago, and who, It Is alp leged, has committed 27 murders, may yet be arrested. He dropped out of sight In 1S72, and for more than 30 yeHrs was believed to be dead, but a few days ago he was discovered living' on a farm near Lawton, O. T. In a burst of confidence he revealect his identity to a neighbor, who In formed the authorities. The old man learned that he had been betrayed and disappeared before the officers arrived. He is said to be heavily armed and ablo to make a bard light, despite the fact that he is more than 70 years old. Hildebrand has many friends in tho section where he has lived for several years, who say that he has been living an upright life for many years. Hilie brand and bis brother, Frank, commit ted many deeds of lawlessness together. Frank was captured and hanged.
