General Maximo Gomez, the Cuban
soldier, patriot and statesman, is dead.
Mrs. Paul Klass has killed her four
small children and committed suicide
at her home near Kller, Wis. She
used a butcher knife, cutting their
throats. The eldest child was 6 and
the youngest a baby. The woman had
been in ill health.

agency has a St. Petersburg dispatch
which states that It is reported from
Manchuria that the Russians have re
captured Hiao Yang, Wopsng, and
Suulch Cheng. They were driven from
these positions on Friday by the Jap
anese troops.

state commerce commission has re
ceived a complaint from the Pacific
Coast Jobbers' Association aa'.nst- the
Southern Pacific's collection of five
cents a tan for wharfage at San Fran
cisco. This charge Is In addition to
the regular rate on shipments origi
nating beyond the boundary of Cali
fornia, when freight is ferried from
Oakland to San Francisco. Complain
ants ask that the road be compelled to
desist charging such tolls and make
restitution of the money wrongfully
collected.

Commencement of Gigantic Project
That Will Ultimately Cost
$9,000,000
Reno, NevM June 18. With the
opening of the Truckee-Carson Canal,
below Reno, Saturday) the first of the
irrigation systems constructed by the
government under the reclamation act,
a new era was opened for Nevada and
the entire West.
The main canal runs frow Derby, 15
miles east of lie no, on the Truckee
River, to a point ten miles above Leye
vllle, on the Carson River, a distance
of 'M miles.
The Initial irrigation system will be
used to distribute water over about 50,-
000 acres of land. During the next two
years the system will, bo extended to
cover 150,000 acreB more. This will
Increase the total distributing system
to a length of 1200 miles. Arrange
ments are now being made to construct
a regulating dam at the mouth of Lake
Tahoe. As a larger area of land is
brought under irrigation and the de
mand for water increases, five or sir
other dams on the Truckee River and
its tributaries will be constructed, and
four reservoirs will be built on the
Carson River. One of the reservoirs
will be 18 miles in length and will have
a surface area of 11,000 acres.
The entire irrigation system as pro
jected will not be completed for nine or
ten years, and will cost about $9,000,
000. After the Initial work is finished
and the first section of land is placed,
under irrigation, the, balance of the
project will be carried out with the
proceeds of the sale of government
land adjacent to the ditches and the
sale of water to the settlers who are
expected to take up the land.
The method of obtaining the govern
ment land in the newly Irrigated area
will.be simple. The charge has been
fixed by the Secretary of the Interior
at a maximum of $26 an acre. This
sum will not represent the purchase
price to the land, but a perpetual title
to the water. The land itself will be m
homestead. Applications for the land
are now being made to the Land Olllce
in Carson City. The water at 326 an
acre will be payable in ten equal in
stallments, and title will not lapse un
til two payments have beon passed,
whioh will give the homesteader the
opportunity of passing over a hard
year. The government will charge no
interest on deferred payments, but will
probably oil'er an Incentive for prompt,
settlements.

race for the Kaiser's cup from Dover to
Heligaland, time 40-43-40.
The American yacht Atlantic won
the race for auxiliary yachts In 41
hours, 26 minutes and 43 seconds.
