They say now that Douglas county's
exhibit at the big fair Is very credit
able.. Keeping everlastingly at it
brings success.
'The way to build up Rosoburg is to
patronize home industries and local
business houses. Moral, go to Port,

D- Withycorabe, of the Corvallis Ag
ricultural college wants to run for gov
ernor on the republican ticket and the
Salem Journal is his sponsor. As an
expert on pests and parasites be might
be able to find out what is the matter
with the G. O. P. in Oregon.
The attempt to quash those Indict
ments against Senator Mitchell on the
technical grounds will only strengthen
popular belief in tho guilt of the ac
cused. An innocent mau, accused of
wrong doing, asks only for a fair and
Impartial trial by a jury of his peers.
To take advantage of the statute of
limitations is tantamount to a confes
sion of guilt and is so regarded by
Bvory fair-minded man.

ur a it Mil. Editor. Your corre
spondent complains of unnecessary
personalities, then let him not indulge
in them. In answering tho question
Did God reveal a new religion to Mrs.
Eddy? he informs us how the Bible was
handed down, and this he labels
"Argument." How Christian Science
was handed down, was what we wanted
to know. He Informs me that the
Presbyterian church has chunged its
creed I didn't know.
He states "that there must be 'some
hidden interior or ulterior motive
which actuates mo in singling out a
Christian woman," etc. There Is, but
she is not a Christian woman, because,
from the simplicity of the gospel she is
teaching her poor dupes to despise the
truth of God, and to believe a monu
mental He, viz: "No personal God,"
which being interpreted means, iNo
God and no Divine government; and
your correspondent who is tied to her
apronstrlngs, cries, "Where Is the harm
or imposture?" which indicates the
trend of his atheistic spirit. Your cor
respondent has studied the teachings of
Christian Science and has found it
"basod on fact and science." Is it
therefore so based? Others, who have
forgotten more than be ever knew, have
studied it, and found it based ou false
hood and drivel. His conclusion is the
same which the fool (In Ps. XIV) said
in his heart 2,900 years ago, only there
is no record that the fool studied the
question at all.
In private life this woman would be
safe, but she is not in private life, and
in her mixture of Pantheistic witch
craft discovered by her, "all alone by
herself," in 18fW, viz.: "Sin, suffering
and death are only imaginations of
mortal mind," her wholo postulate Is
fuls o, uuruasonablo, unphilosophlcal,
uuscriptural and soul-destroying. What
did sho discover moro? She began by
making the same blunder which every
tyro in philosophy makes, by assuming
the nonexistence of matter. This was
the case of her groat discovery. She
was too Ignorant ever to have heard of
"Berkeley," and to have read "Turgo's
hlstoty of philosophy" (in which her
hypothesis was ridiculed a hundred
years ago, as the first guoBS of every
beginner) wasboyoud her powers. But
she discovered, as none ovor boforo,
how to wrest tho Scriptures to her owu
aud others' destruction.
Further, your correspondent informs
me that I display my Ignorance of
Christian Science, and In this he Is
correct, for no mau of ordinary Intelli
gence could understand such a mess of
iudigosted contradictions. Uti further
Informs me that Mrs. KiMy docs not
villify nor maligu any person. What
does he make of tho following reported
by one of nor neighbors, when speak
lug of a woman sho didn't like: "1
would like to tear her heart nut, and
trample it under my feet." I am asked,
was not Christ's system of healing in
fallible? yes, aud the miracles were
wrought instantaneously and complete
ly, and that, in order that we might
believe that J opus Is tho Sun of God,
and that believing wo might have life
through his namo. Hut it is not the
characteristic of the so-called cures of
Christian Science. It is a scheme of
money getting.
On tho Kddy htblo cover, Is printed,
"heal the sick, raise tho dead, cleanse
tho lept'.rs, cast out demons," AU
these Jesus did. But we fall (o hear of

If they did, the removal must necessari
ly be imaginary. Fancy Mrs. Eddy
saying to Dr. Fletcher, "Extract this
molar that I imagine pains me." But
her Imagination needed a supplement,
in the shape of a local anaesthetic.
Then I am Informed, that, after the
manner of all quacks, "she has hun
dreds of testimonials to her cures,"
but what of it? As much can be said
for Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale
People.
Your correspondent and Mrs. Eddy
lam further informed, have a right to
"expostulate" on the teachings of the
Bible. That is what she has been try
ing to do all along. When one "ex
postulates" ho Is not in harmony. I
would "expostulate" with your corre
spondent but not with the Holy
Scriptures,
I would also inform your correspond
ent that all the dozen denominations,
which he calls impostors for me, be
lieve in the Apostle's Creed, which in
cludes belief in a personal God and in
Jesus Christ bis only Son, our Savior,
who was crucified, etc., all of which
Mrs. Eddy denies. Besides, these de
nominations, whatevertheir differences
in detail, agree in the great central
doctrinos of atonement by the death of ;
Christ, and think of each other as
Christians, so that the name "im
postors" is still reserved for such as
Dowie, Smith, Schlatter, Eddy & Co.,
for misery loves company. The Idea of
your correspondent classifying this
caricature of science and religion, that
Mrs. Eddy discovered, with the Christ
ian churches of Rose burg, is a piece of
brncn effrontery. Not one of the
dozen would consider Christian Sclenco
good enough for a door-mat, for well
they know that to accept it they would
have to give up both the Christian
religion and common sense.
Your correspondent, who does not be
lieve in a personal God, handles me very
gently, as well as Presbyterians gener
ally. Such a Pagan may deal with us
as he pleases, us we consider his bless
ing to be synonymous with his curse.
Who cares for the opinion of a "Master
Facing Both Ways" who, perched upon
the fence, believes in Christian Science
and patronizes physicians. Ue re
minds me of the Chinaman who was in
danger of drowning, calling out "Good
God, good devil," aud who when he
was saved, explained his prayer by say
ing, "Ho old not. know into which of
their hands he wnutd fall."
And now a few samples of tho cere
brations of this ' oure and consecrmed
christian woman.'' as her " Kx postu
late r" calls her. Tn all this blasphemy
she has had no In ip. It is all her own
discovery.
Bible "Forme 1 man of the dust of tho
ground and bmi .iid luio his nostrils
tho breath of lilt , and man became a
living soul.''
K.Jily "No so -h thing as uuion of
soul 11 ml matter."
Bibla "The c-mifortor whom I will
soud in my numb."
EJdy "This comforter I understand
to be divine science."
Bible "The death of his Son."
Eddy "The seeming death of his
Son."
Bible "Christ died for sin."
Kddy "Christ seemed to die for sin."
Bible "Marriage is honorable In
all."
Eddy "To abolish marriage at this
period and muinlala mcrality ai:d
generation, would put ingenuity to
lu.licrous slilts, yet this is possible
tti science."
Bible "The word was God."
Eddy '" The true logos or word Is
de:n.ns:r.ib!y Christian Science."
Bible "Thy money perish with thee,
because thou bust thought that the
gift of God may bo purchased with

Kidy "The patient, who pays what
he is able to vy for being lu-a?rd, is

holds a flight equivalent for health. '
he I our readers judne for themselves.
Despite your correspondent's denial,
it means, "Pay in advance," for how
could the cure be made "more apt"
after it had been already accomplished.
Who ever heard of a doctor advertising
that be would heal, according to the
size of his fee, yet, that is distinctly
what Mrs. Eddy does. Mrs. Eddy tells
of receiving hundreds of dollars for
what she and her book have done for'
them, In healing them of diseases. If
there was no money in it, .she would
have no followers, nor would she teach
it.-
As the scripture says: "Through
covetousncss shall they with feigned
words make merchandise of you."
Mrs. Eddy's college in Boston, for
teaching the theory of Christian Sci
ence healing in twelve lessons, extond
ing three weeks, was put down by the
Massachusetts legislature, because it
was unwilling to be responsible for the
practice of three weeks graduates in
healing. The tuition fee was 9300,
which she blasphemously declares God
led her (o name as the price, and 300
students, she informs us, were at that
time clamoring for admission. Think
of this scheme for money getting,
$1, 500,000 per annum as the salary of
thispugan denier of a personal God,
this scripture wrester, who, according
to the testimony of her neighbors, .can
not destinguish between an adjective
and a noun.
In selling her books, first at $5 each,
and afterwards at $3.IS, she claims to
have swelled her hank account by a
million dollars, and all of her followers
are her book age'nts. Look out for
them.
Not content with wresting tfhe scrip
tures, she has invented a glossary
which is unique in its way, and by
which she can make the bible say just
what she wants It to say. A few
samples:
JesusA human corporeal concept.
Holy Ghost Divine Science understood
and acknowledged. Matter Mythology.
Mind The only I, or was. Death An
Illusion. Flesh An error of physical
belief. Oil Gentleness, prayer. Wine
Error, fornication. So that, accord
ing to Mrs. Eddy, the Good Samaritan
poured into the man's wounds a mixture
of gentleness, prayer, error and forni
cation. The only wonder is that he
ivod to reach the way3ide inn, and how
the poor fellow must have longed for
another dose of the comparatively
mild medicine administered by the
highway robbers.
vOn page 40, Mrs. Eddy gives the cure
for a boil: "Now, administer mentally
to your patient a high attenuation of
truth, and It will cure the boil." This ,
I supposed to be an improvement upon
tsalah's remedy on King Hezekiah. He
did not say to Hezekiah, "You stop 1
your grunting; you have no pain," nor
did he administer mentally a high at
tenuation of truth, but be took a lump
of figs and applied it physically to the
boil, which was common sense.
Some months since a little girl in
Lodl, Calif., was burned so severely
that every stitch of her clothing was
consumed. Did her Christian Scien
tist parents call in a physician who
could have relieved her agonies In a
few seconds? Nay, tbey administered
high attenuations of trulh and con
tinued at it until next day, when death
mercifully came to her release. I ara
grieved when I hear of a grown-upsub-jectlng
himself to these attenuations,

WASHINGTON, D. C.
Hi: S
but lb makes one's blood boil to hear of
a child being submitted to it with no
pity for its dying agonies. Hundreds
are in tneir graves who would have
been alive but for Christian Science.
Mrs. Eddy says hygienic laws are
more honored in the breach than in
the observance. Her followers, like
herself, are gypsies in philosophy you
never know where to find them. Atone
time she talks of the evidence of the
senses, and at another tells us that
"the evidence of the five senses, is not;
to be believed . " Her book is full of
strange contradictions. I
On page 182, sickness is without real
existence, while page 14 tells us how
sickness is caused. Oa page 392, "man
Is never sick," and immediately after
she says, "it is well to be calm In sick
ness." On page 387, "food doos not af
fect the existence of man," but on the
following page, "one bad convulsions
produced by indigestion." On page
422, "no such thing as consumption"
and the next page gives a cure for con
sumption. Who ever came across such a jargon
of inconsistencies and wild hallucina
tions. .Error always tries to assume
the guise of truth. So the devil quoted
scripture. Arsenic with the red label
is shunned, but hidden in marshmallow
it is an enemy in ambush, all the more
dangerous for being so hidden.
If Mrs. Eddy's unmitlgntel fraud
should move upon the stage of life and
play it's part in it's own costume, men
would hiss the hideous thing oil the
boards. But instead, it borrows the
livery of heaven to hide its deformity.
Every time an educated man sees
Christian Science he has bis laugh at
the pretentions and sham learning of
Its founder. Like other fungi that feed
on decay, it will have its day and cease
to be. Its only perpetuity lies along
the line of snobbery. This hue now
become almost as ridiculous as its
"metaphysics," and when it does final
ly disappear, it will die amid the inex
tinguishable laughter of the world.
