The St. Peters burg correspondent of the Central news wires his paper that persistent rumors are current there to the effect that a naval battle between the Russians and Japanese fleets is in progress oil the island of Formosa. RUMORED DEFEAT OP JAPS. Manila, May 25. An unconfirmed rumor is prevalent here to the effect that the Japanese fleet has been de feated by the Russians in an engage ment souh of Formosa. WILL RETIRE ROJESTVENSKY , London, May 25. A dispatch to the Times from St. Petersburg says that General Linievitch has demanded the recall of General Kuropatkin. The dispatch adds that Admiral Ro jestvensky has been Beriously ill for two weeks, according to reliable pri vate information received from Sai gon, and unable to command his fleet, this duty falling upon sub ordinate officers. Rojestvensky 's differ ences with the admiralty at St. Peters burg on a strateglo policy will make retention of his command -impossible even if he recovers from bis illness. This is so well known that it is having a depressing effect upon the people, who looked upon Rojestvensky as the one man who could possibly turn the tide of war in favor of Russia. It was announced today that Bense is going to the United States to purchase three battleships and eight cruisers for the Russian navy. governor assassinated. Baku Trans-Caucasia, May 24. Prince Nakecbldz, governor of Baku, was assassinated this afternoon by the explosion of a bomb thrown at his car riage while riding In the streets. A lieutenant, as well as a bystander, were killed. The coachman was injured and will probably die. TOGO STILL OPP COREAN COAST. London, May 24. The Shanghai correspondent of the Morning Post says he learns from a trustworthy source that Vice-Admiral Togo's fleet is still off Masampho, on the southeast ern coast of Corea LOCAL NEWS. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Gabbert and children returned to Dothan Tuesday evening, ufter a visit with relatives of Mrs. Gabbert at Wardton. Senator C. W. Fulton was here from Astoria today and will address the graduating class of the Roseburg High School at the opera house tonight. He has nothing material to add to his recent interviews regarding the ap pointment of new officials In the U. S. land office at Roseburg. Special Excursion Rates. j A special train for Roseburg and Cottage Grove day at the-Lewis & Clark fair, June 12, will leave Rose burg at 0:30 a. m. on Sunday, June 11. Tickets will be good to return on any regular train until June 18, inclusive, but passengers must go to Portland on this special train in order to get the fol lowing greatly reduced rates for the round trip: Roseburg 85.25, Wilbur $5.10, Oakland $5.00, Rice Hill (4.75, Yoncalla $1.50, Drain $4,40, Comstock 84.25, Cottage Grove $4.00. GATHERING FAIR EXHIBITS. Sew Telephone System to Melrose and French Settlement. Eon. D. S. K. Buick and a Review representative drove out several miles down along the Umpqua river Wednes day, gathering samples of products for exhibition at the Lewis and Clark fair. A number of varieties of grasses and some fine barley were secured, besides other products. Most grains and many grasses are not yet far enough ad vanced for cutting as samples, al though the crops are looking fine and will make a splendid showing a few weeks later. Without exception the producers offered freely whatever they hod, for this purpose. The generous hospitality of Messrs Geo. and Thos. Scott and their vener able parents was enjoyed, and we there learned that the holes have been dug and the poles will be turned out in. a few days for a telephone system from Roseburg to the Wilson farm, beyond Melrose and north of the French Settle ment school house. From there a line will be extended to the farm of R. A. Woodruff. There are now fifteen subscribers on this line. A list of eight more in Flournoy valley are discussing the matter of extending aline there and this will probably be done at an early date. The Melrose and French Settlement system is to be put in right away. Some excellent road work is being done iu the Melrose district under the dlreotion of Supervisor Edw. Von Pessl. Considerable grading has been done and new bridges put in. With a large scraper devised by A. S. Clayton, as much work was accomplished in a few hours yesterday as could have been done in two days by a like force of men and teams with the ordinary road scrapers. It is a simple and cheap device and could be made at home and profitably used in .nearly every road district. Messrs Buick, Chas. Anderson and others will be collecting exhibits in other neighborhoods for the next couple of days and it is expected that as many as possible will be shipped to Portland Monday to be put in place in the space reserved for Douglas County Capt. It being understood that the. annual pioneers' re-union will not beheld at the Olalla grounds this yoar, the local direc tors of the District Fair have generous ly offered the free use of the Fair Grounds near this city for that purpose. It is suggested that the annual re-unlon be held in conjunction with the District Fair to be held here on Sept. 12 to 16, inclusive. In compliance with this the Fair management have generously of fered to the pioneers the free use of the grounds, Including the race track, for two days, Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 11 and 12, where they may hold their exercises and enjoy whatever amuse ments, sports, races, etc., they may care to arrange for. There are excel lent camp grounds adjacent where they may locate and remain dur ing the week and enjoy the Fair after the re-union exercises are over. Sold by Fullerton & Richardson. Town of White Horse Burned. Vancouvek, B. a, May 24. Fire practically wiped out the business por tion of White Horse, yesterday, entail log a loss of $250,000. The Ore burned for bburs, destroying all the hotels, restaurants and lodging houses, so that hundreds of people waiting for the opening of navigation to proceed to Dawson are left witbout food or she! ter. The fire started in a small store on First Avenue, between Elliott and Main streets, and destroyed every building within two blocks. The largq warehouses of the White Pass & Yukon Company caught fire several timos, but the flames were extin guished. Hoi Weather Piles. William Zlegler, the nillllonaire baking powder man and financial backer of Polar expeditions, died at 11:30 o'clock j this morning at bis home on Great Island, aged 62 years. ' Cleared For Action. Came to Oregon in 1865 and to Douglas County in 1871 Elected . in June, 1894. Hon. James E, Bluadell, ex-repre sentative and a resident of Douglas County for 31 years, died at his borne three miles east of Riddle, Wednesday morning, May 24, 1905, of heart failure superinduced by a complication of asthma and dropsy. He was 62 years of age. Mr. Blundell was born in Bridge port, Oonn., May 7, 1843, and came to Oregon in 1805. In 1871 he settled in Douglas County, taking up the pro fession of a school teacher and later the vocation of a farmer. He was elected to the Oregon legislature from Douglas County, on the republican ticket, In June, 1894, serving one term. During the sessions of the next legisla ture, 1890-l)8,;he served as sergeant-at-arms. Mr. Blundell is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters. He was an exemplary citizen and highly es teemed by all who knew him. He was a charter member of Umpqua Lodge A, F. & A. M., of Canyonville. Circuit Court Cases. Clrouit court adjourned at noon to day until Wednesday morning, May. 31, at 9 o'clock, when Judge Hamilton will render a decision upon a motion for a new trial in the case of Wollenberg vs. Sykes, wherein a verdiot was returned by a jury against the plaintiff, who sought to recover money from the de fendant upon a building bond, on which Mr. Sykes was a surety. So complete and thorough was the virtual lockout that in a short lime every lumber company in Chicago except two, was reported as having practically suspended operations owing to lack of teamsters. Peace prospects have faded away, along with the vanishing hopes of concessions that might be made by the express companies. The express agents, hold ing the koy to the situation, so far as any apparent chance of soltlemont was cdncorned, having refused to retreat one Inch from their previously announ ced position all negotiations were at an end, and employers and team sters began preparing for a vigorous campaign of indefinite length. Mayor Dunne and Sheriff Barrett were pre ! pared to give tbe signal that would bring the state troops into the streets j of the city at the first indications of aa out-Dreaic following the newly devel oped situation. Uoorer Building Will Contain Four Different Businesses' Work on clearing away debris on the Hoover property, between Wollenberg Bros.' dry goods store and J. A. Mo Dougall's tailor shop, is In progress to day, preparatory to exoavation for a new brick building to be erected by G. W. Hoover, of Portland. The building contract has been awarded to F. F Patterson, of thiB olty, the considera tion being $4550. Mr. Patterson ex pects to complete the building in every respect by the 20th of next June. The building will be 53 feet wide. 100 feet deep and one story high. Ib will be divided into three mala apartments, each about 17 feet wide. The north appartment will be oc cupied by H. O. Wilkinson for saloon purposes. The west 60 feet of the center apartment will be used for a barber shop by a party whose name is not learned. The south apartment and the east 24 feet of the central part of the building will be occupied by Arthur Mahoney, pro prietor of the Rosoburg Soda Works. Mr. Mahoney will manufacture his soda in the rear of the store and con duct a bowling alloy In tho west 80 feeb thereof.
