Pendmcton, May 22. Half a million
pounds of wool changed hands in this
city today at the annual wool sale.
Tho growers who held for the sales are
highly elated over the excellent prices
which thoy secured for their clips.
Tho lowest bid was 18 cents, and the
highest 22 cents, the latter being paid
for the clip of George McDonald,
amounting to about 10,000 pounds.
The Bhooptnen who held for the sales
received from 1 to 5 conts more per
pound than did those who sold before
the annual sale. It is believed by those
who had their wool up today that if
more of tho country's sheepmen had
held olT there would have been mere
buyers present, and competition would
have been much koonor and the prices
advanced a little higher.
The sale took place at tho Furnish
warehouse, opening at 10 o'clock In
the morning and closing at 3:20 P. M.
12. P. Marshall managed the salo in
the usual way of opening a few sample
sacks of each lot of wool, so that the
buyers could judge the product before
putting in their bids. Tho bids were
written on slips of paper and handed
to .Mr. Marshal, who read the name Jof
the highest biddor, after comparing the
dltTerent otters.
Today 8 sale. was tho most successful
affair of the kind ever hold, and prices
ranged from 1 to 7 cents higher than
ever before. Many sheepmen sold
early in the soason, some even contract
ing thoir clip before shoaring com
menced as low as 17 couts.

Defends Christian Science.

"God is asked by Christian Scientists
to heal pain which wo have been al
ready told has no existence in fact."
Argument: This assertion marks a
still further lack of understanding of
Mrs. Eddy's teachings, and, while the
statement was answered in the previous
paragraph, a few more words of ex
planation are herewith offered: The
Christian Scientist claims that God is
not a person, but, as St. John wrote

Spirit etc. The Christian Scientist j
claims that God, Spirit, is Love, Life,
Truth, that which governs and controls
man, His image and likeness. It would
be as absurd to ask the divine Principal
of man to heal pain, as to ask the prin
ciples of geometry to demonstrate a
theorem. When the Christian Scien
tist has grown sufficiently Christlike to
live, move and have his boing in God,
he partakes sufficiently of that God
nature, becomes so harmonized with
God, Love, Life, has so out grown the
testimony of material convictions of
pain, disease, etc., as to utilize the
divine power, just as was tanght by
the Saviour. The Christian Scientist
does not "ask God to heal pain" as Mr.
Townsond would know if he were con
versant with the principles as taught,
but, the Scientist, knowing and demon
strating the fact that, in God, there is
no pain, sickness, etc., and, coming in
to this knowledge and demonstration,
such harmony is manifest between God,
Spirit, Love, Truth, and the person,
that pain, sickness, etc., under such
matured realization, cannot exist.
Fifth. Mr. Townsond attacks Mrs.
Eddy for saying: "No doubt celibacy
is the best state," while the fact re
mains that she has been three times
married. Is it
fair to select one

might be proved in this manner by and
from the Bible or any other book; aod,
since this unfair advantage has been
used, let me say that there are about
5000 words in the chapter on Marriage
in Mrs. Eddy's Science and Health
...
with Key to the Scriptures, and one
cannot well get the author's meaning
without reading the whole chapter.
Here Is one sontence from the said
chapter which will give the reader an
idea of the trend of Mrs. Eddy's
thoughts on marriage, but, to under
stand it well, the reader is olted to the
whole: "Marriage should improve the
human species, becoming a barrier
against vice, protection to woman,
strength to man and a center for the
affections."
Sixth. It is further declared that
"Physicians do not maintain that their
system in infallible, while Eddyists do."
Argument: Was not Christ's system
of healing infallible? Was he not a
true teacher? Do not the Christian
Scientists take him at his word and
command? Have they not obeyed
Jesus' Instructions, in that they,
through the Christ system, have shown
results in thousands of cases? The
Scientist does not claim to heal at all,
other than through the power and
harmony of God as exemplified by
Jesus.
Seventh. In conclusion I will state:
That I am not a member of the C.

S. church; but, having studied their
teachings, I claim to understand suffi
cient thereof to cause me to believe
that the same are based upon facts and
science incontrovertible, (b) That the
only "consideration" I received for
writing the former article was a
knowledge of having performed a
public duty; that the Christian Scien
tists of Koseburg, or elsewhere, did not
know of tho same until it appeared in
the Evknino Rkview. (c) That,
should Mr. Townsend fully acquaint
himself with the aims aod teachings of
the people whom he denounces, he
would find less "pleasure" in making
what to the publie must be considered
an unjust, It not an undignified attack.
