this city, Tuesday evening. Dr. Du

H. Snook, the well known Salem
contractor, passed through here Tues
day evening enroute to Klamath Falls
to commence work on the new county
high school, for which he was recently
awarded a building contract. The
steam heating plant will be installed
and the plumbing work done by Messrs
Sykes and Carroll, of this city.

Melvln Strane, who 1b employed by
the Mountain Copper Co., which has
been operating at Keswick, Calif.,
passed through here Tuesday evening
enroute to Golconda, Nov., from Oak
land, this county, where he had been
visiting with his family. Mr. Strane
stated that the copper company was
engaged in moving its immense
smelter plant and other apparatus
from Keswick to Martinez, on San
Francisco Bay. This is the outcome of
seven years litigation between the
company and the ranchmen in the vi
cinity of Keswick, the latter claiming
that the gases from the smelter de
stroyed the vegetation in the surround
ing country. The light in the courts
finally ended in San Francisco a lew
weeks ago when the United States Dis
trict Court issued a permanent injunc
tion against the company. As a result
of thi, the company decided to move
its plant elsewhere and Martinez was
the place selected.

DIED.
HIXSONi -At Brockwav, Oregon, May
22, 1905, Mrs. Mary llixson, wife of
W. G. Hlxson, aged about 72 years,
of heart failure.
Deceased was at the family home on
the Dawlln place Monday evening,
talking with her husband and son of
the death of Mr. Jas. Davlin which
had occurred the day before, when
she suddenly threw up her hands and
expired. Death evidently came from
heart failure, as she had apparently
been in her usual health, although
somewhat enfeebled from advanced
age.
Deceased was an Oregon pioneer of
1852, and the family had resided in
this county slnco about 1884. She is
survived by her aged hUBband, nine
boos and two daughters. The sons are
Andrew, Sherman, George, Edward,
jack, Eugene, Berry, Stephen and
William. Two other sons, John and
Lincoln, died some years ago. Several
of the sons reside on the McKenzie
river, in this state. The daughters are,
Mrs. Geo. M. Kellar, of Brook way,
and Mrs. L. E. Moore, of Cottonwood,
Calif. The funeral was held at Brock
way cemetery today.
Mrs. I. O. Kent, who was In town
TueBday evening, calls attention to the
fact that Mrs. Hixson is the eighth
early pioneer of Oregon who died in a
radius of 7 or 8 miles in that vicinity
within the past four months.
