Smith Gets Ten Tears.- San Francisco, May 23. E. J. Smith, San Franoisco's Tax Collector, who fled from San Francisco to St. Louis, pleaded guilty to embezzlement today and was sentenced to ten yearB' imprisonment, the maximum sentence. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church today voted to unite with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, which seceeded from the general body February 1, 1610, thereby bringing together the two largest braochen of the Presbyterian faith. An oDlolal report from the Japanese headquarters south of the Sungarl river says. that a Rus sian detachment, consisting of one bat talion of Infantry and six squadrons of cavalry, on Sunday attacked the'hoights north of Cheu Yage Po, but were repulsed with heavy loss. On Monday, continues the report, another, force of Russians advanoed on Chien Chen Tsu, but were driven back after desperate fighting. The Russian cavalry on the right bank of the Liao river com menced retreating on Monday morn ing. COSSACKS SUFFER HEAVY LOSS Gunshu PASS, May 24. A bold reconnoisance on part of General Ren nenkamff 's Cossack horsemen, to ascer tain the' strength of the Japanese posi tions, has resulted in the loss of sev eral hundred men. , RAILROAD BELIEVED INTACT ' : St. Petersburg, May 24. There is no confirmation in official circles of the report emanating..from London to the. effeot that the" Japanese had cut ' the railroad leading to' Vladivostok. Hunt, of Ashland, was buying beef cattle on the creek. We under stand he purchased of R. O. Goff twenty seven head of oattle and five year old steers, which he intended shipping north. The party given at L. Baldwin's was an entire success. C. F. Krogel has been plowing with a disc plow for summer fallow. We understand that J. L. Mr. Hitchcock Is willing to consent to the appointment of one, but declares be will not permit the appointment of the other if he can help it. It is understood that B. L. Eddy, of Tillamook county, rooommendod by Mr. Fulton, has been agreed upon for register at Boseburg, and that the senator has refused to consent to the appointment of J. M. Lawrence, of Crook county, as reolevor. Mr. Law. rence is the man whom Mr. Hitchcock wants appointed to this office. If Mr. Hitchcock seonreB the appoint ment of Lawrence over the protest of Mr. Fulton, there is a chance that Mr. Fulton will be able to prevent the con firmation of Lawrence when his nomi nation is sentto the senate next winter. Many senators resent the appointment of federal officers over their heads, especially when appointees are seleoted by oablnet officers, and the fooling among wostern senators against Mr. Hitchcock has been so strong that Mr. Fulton would probably be able to muster strong support on both sides of the chamber. Mr, Hitchcock is aware of this senti ment in the senate and will probably hesitate before turning down Mr. Fulton on this appointment.
