Dickens was discharged. The trial lasted three days, and two night sessions were held. The evidence showed that Potter, a man of 40 years, had seduced the 14-year-old daughter of Dickens; The latter learned of the affair the day of the shooting, and also that Potter had promised to cease further attentions to the ohild until she was of ge, when he' agreed to marry her. The girl complained to her father that Potter still pursued her with his proposals. When the men met Fotter used abusive and threatening language, spoke slightingly of the girl, and made a motion as if to draw a gun. Marks Estate vs' H. Walling, et al. Oregon City, Mayo Circuit Judge McBride has taken under advisement the case of H. Wollenberg, surviving partner and administrator of the estate of S. Marks, deceased, vs. H. Walling, etal. Tho case was sent up from Doug las County, as Judge Hamilton, who presides in that circuit, bad appeared as attorney for one of tbe litigants. A huge mass of papers, packed in Beveral large boxes, came up from Roseburg to County Clerk Greenman. Close to $160,000 worth of property is involved in the suit, which was brought to set aside a deed that was executed in Rus sia, by which it is alleged the defend ant obtained from the Russian heirs of Marks real estate and personal prop erty worth $150,000 for $16,000, and that the transfer was obtained by fraud and misrepresentation. x The depositions were in the Russian, English and Yid dish tongues. Jimmy Britt, of San Francisco, gained the title of lightweight champion pugilist of the world in this city last night, by defeating Jabez White, the champion of his class In England. Victory came to the American in the 20th and final round when he ecored a knockout on his game opponent. The Sght through out was one of the most scientific seen In the county for years. For fourteen rounds the battle went on wltbout either man seeming to have the advantage. In the 16th round, however, Britt began to force matters in rapid Bre style and from that time on tbe result was never in doubt. White, unable to come back effectively, was forced to take a terrific beating, albeit with the gameness of a bull-dog. In the 20th round, Britt hammored the Briton unmercifully, one well directed blow sending Wblte to the floor for the second time during the round. At this juncture the police entered the ring to stop the unequal light, but their trouble was unnecessary as White was unable to regain bis feet before tbe re quired ten seconds bad elapsed. Arrangements are now under way to bring about another match between Britt and Battling Nelson. Although Britt has gained a decision over the sturdy Dane, the battle, in tbe opinion of nearly all of those who witnessed It, did not show the superiority of either man. The advance forces of the Japanese are already in contact with the Russians guarding the main road between Gakomen and Bashlen Chen . On Thursday Japanese auvalry at tacked a force of Cassacks and forced them to retire. Japanese Infantry Ira. mediately followed up the attack by slezlng the village of Palatoun, from whicb tbe Russians fled. Twenty miles west of here, a Rus sian reconnolterlng force ran into a Japanese ambush and all but five of the Russians were killed. , KUROPATKIN TO RETURN. I St, Petersburg, May 8. Robbers Still at Large. Special to Evening Review. Salem, Or., May 6. The Woodburn bank robbers have not yet been caught. Detectives who have been working on the case have been recalled to Port land, where a strong clew to the Ident ity and whereabouts of the robbers is Junior Day Exercises.
