Governor Chamberlain has taken the "bull by the horns, and put forty to six ty men at work on the public roads in Marion county, says the Salem Journal. Ho has the hearty co-operation of the Marion county court, but the governor deserves the credit (or bis willingness to test the matter. Governor Chamberlain last . year built several miles of first-class public highway from the city limits to the state reform school. He did that against local indifference and some opposition, as the heads of other institutions wanted the money spent on roads between the asylum and cottage farm, that are not really state roads. The legislature never took' the trouble to Investigate the road that Governor Chamberlain did build. Not a member ever went to see the road, and not a dollar appropriated to con tinue state road building by convict la bor. The legislature was too busy draw ing down mileage, while they rode on free passes, to pay any attention to such a commonplace thing aB building bettor roads for the farmers. Without any special legal authority, excopt what the constitution vests in him, as head of the state, and what the general lawB gives him in control of the state prison, Governor Chamberlain has put the convicts at the disposal of Marlon county. The fact is, about twenty convicts in a few months last summer built the best piece of road in the county, excepting always what the Liberty farmers and the Marlon county court built, south of this city. Governor Chamberlain haB started right and desorvos crodit as the Urst govornor of Orogon to Klvo convict road building a substantial impetus that will rosult In many miles of line highways being constructed. Marlon county has boon a pioneer in the educational work of good roads building, and this Ib the proper county to begin this work. Hundredsof miles of road can be built by this plun by tho different counties of 1 the state, and the work should be en couraged and supported by all friends of good government. Insure YourProperty. In nearly every circus you will find a group of acrobats that are willing to risk their lives daily for a big salary. No feat is too dangerous for these fool hardy athletes to attempt. The per formers In question are Melnotte, La Nole and Melnotte. Norris & Rowe brought them from Europe, where they had been the sensation of the Paris hippodrome for three years. John and Amy LaNole and Hugh Melnotte per form upon a slender silver wire high in the air over the heads of the audience and with no net to proteot them in case of fall. These Intrepid performers ac complish feats that require the most delicate balance. The young woman has placed upon the thin wire, a table and two chairs of different heights. Carefully balancing hersolf and meas uring the distance with her eye, with a lightning leap, clears the barrier. There is a swish of silken skirts, a Hash in the air and she lands safely upon the wire on the other side. A. misstep would precipitate her to the ground whore she could hardly escape serious Injury or death. Manager Rowe at first tried to persuade the young woman to omit this portion of her act, but flnolly soolng that hor nerves wore of steul, let hor continue. As for Melnotte, LaNole and Melnoito they simply laugh at danger and sny they will soon attompt an even more danger ous feat. With constant success they seem to forget they aro daily trilling with death. They will be seen here when the Norris & Rowe's greater cir cus exhibits at Roseburg, Friday May 5, at 2 and 8 p. m. Tho old way of Caking pepsin, bis muth, etc, to cure dyspepsia Is all wrong. They may be put up In tablets or In liquid, tho result Is Just the same. Weak, sickly people often remark "if I could only get something that would nourish me and give rao some strength," they do not know why, but the food they eat is of no benefit to them, they gain no flesh and feel no Btronger. The fact is the stomach is too weak to perform its work, and the little appetite they once had Is soon gone. The blood becomes more thin and watery, bringing on faint sick spells with loss of memory and ambi tion. There is a remedy for all this that acts in the right way. It is called Dr. Gunn's Blood and Nerve Tonic, and is sold by all druggists for 75c. per box, or three boxes for $2. It turns the food you eat into rich, red blood, making tlesh and strength, creating an appetite because tbe system demands sustenance. For sale by A. C. Mars ters & Co.
