Chicago, May 2. Mayor Dunne and
Chief of Police O'Neill claim the strike
situation is well in hand today and that
there will be no need for interference
by Governor Deneon or President
Roosevelt by calling out the state or
federal troops. It is said there are now
2000 strike-breakers in the city, mostly
negroes, but no raerious disturbances
have occurred. To prevent conflicts
there are now 1200 police and SCO plain
clothes men and detectives doing strike
duty today.
The Union, Traction Co., and the
Morgan & Wright Rubber Co, this
morning deserted the Employers' Asso
ciation and signed agreements with the
Coal Teaming Co., using union men.
The strikers claim this is an important
accession to their cause.
THE MAY DAY SITUATION
Chicago, May 1. May day opened
the third week of the teamsters' strike
with premonitions of a general strike.
Yesterday's conferences of strike lead
ers developed no alternative but to con
tinue the struggle to the bitter end, for
no signs of conciliation are vouchsafed
from the employers, who are relentless
in their determination to destroy tbe
teamsters' union. Five hundred col
ored strike breakers arrived. this morn
ing on a special train from St. Louis
under the leadership of F. J. Conroy,
a well known strike breaker, guarded
by 40 armed detectiveB. It is reported
that the negroes are sworn in as deputy
United States marshals and paid $2.50 a
day to drive the wagons. This is the
element considered most likely to pre
cipitate disorders. Strike Breaker
Farley, who defeated tbe subway strike
in New York has also arrived. -
All the available strength of the po
lice department, 1,000 men, . was
thrown into the struggle this morning.
Chief of Police O'Neill says that there
must not be temporizing, and tbat
traffic muet be unimpeded and tbat dis
order muBt stop. The police will search
all Buspects for concealed weapons and
make arrests in every case where a
weapon is found. Contempt proceed
ings will be begun today against those
accused of violation of the federal in
junctions. The spread of the strike to
the stockyards is expected today.
Chicago is to witness the spectacle
tomdrrow of 1000 dod unionist team
sters armed with repeating riSes. It
was admitted this afternoon by Super
intendent Reed, of the Employers'
Teaming Company, that arrangements
were being made to procure the first
Installment of the rifle?, which, being
unconcealed, may ;be carried without
infraction of the law. 1
Chief of Police O'Neill said he would
make no attempt to remove this brist
ling martial effect from Obioago's
streets. He said.
"I will not seek to prevent what ap
pears to be legal. There is no law that
empowers me to probiblt men from
carrying unconcealed weapons, and
I'll make no attempt to do so. I was
asked for an opinion on this subject
by a representative of the Employers'
Teaming Company, and answered to
that effect."
In other trades and employments
there is a more peaceful condition than
on May day for several years past,
and in most of them new agreements
have been signed up for another year.
A few have been granted a slight In
crease In wages, and others get some
concessions in working conditions.
PEACEFUL IN NEW YORK.

building trades, but before the week
end 30,000 to 35.0CO men may quit work
in various vocations in hope of forcing
an increased wage. While there are
some small disturbances, no general
strikes are anticipated.

El Paso, Texas, May 2. It is re
ported here that a body of Mexican
troops has been defeated by a band of
Yaquls Indians, in the state of Sonoro,
Mexico. Nearly all the soldiers wore
killed and the remainder captured.

ment, promulgated by the City Council
Although the plan had been dlsoussed
at previous meetings of the solons, no
definite step was taken towards carry
ing out the projeot owing to the fact
that a suitable place to dump the refuse
matter could not be Becured. This re
quirement has been met, however,
through an opinion from Dist. Atty.
Geo. M. Brown, in which he advises the
city to use the river for the purpose
desired. Acting on this advice, the
councilmen intend to have the garbage
dumped into tbe river at the foot of
Oak street, A committee consisting of
Messrs Rice, Sykos and West have been
appointed to look into the matter of
hiring a man with a horBe and cart and
ascertain the probable expense thereof.

Tbe ordinance providing for assess
ments to defray the expenses of con
structing the sewer on the south side
of Oak street, from Main to Fowler,
and a sewer in the alley between Mill
and Pine streets, from Floed to Burke
streets, were due for their third and
final readings, but they were laid on
the table. A protest was filed against
the assessment for the sewer on Oak
street, setting forth that under' said
assessment the property owners on one
side of the street would have to bear
all the expense of construction of Bald
sewor, whereas, residents of the oppo
site side of the street were going to
connect with the sewer and that they
should be called upon to bear a pro
rata part of the cost. A committee
donsisting of Messrs Parks, Burr and
Mlcelli were appointed to look into the
matter and report at tbe next regular
meeting.
The assessment for the construction
of the sewer between Mill and Pine
streets was held up because the sewer
was laid In such a manner that several
of the abutting property owners could
not connect thereto with benefit. Sur
veyor Fenn, who was present at the
meeting and who drafted the plans and
specifications for the sewer, explained

A lot of discussion among the council
men followed', but no action on the
matter was taken,
STREET MATTERS
A remonstrance against the proposed
improvement of Main street, from
Mosher to Douglas, was laid on the
table. It is understood tbat a petition,
subsequent in date, is to be .presented,
asking for tbe improvement of one
block of Main street, from Oak to
Washington.
No bids were received for doing the
improvement work on Jackson street,
from Lane to Cass. The Recorder was
instructed to readvei lise for bids, the
same to be presented to htm by
Wednesday evening, May 3rd, at 7
o'clock, when the co incil will meet in
special session. In connection with
this matter a grade was ordered estab
lished on the bloclr extending south
from Lane street, where it is proposed
to dump the earth tuxen from the block
to be improved.
It was resolved to frame an ordinance
requesting tbe Soul horn Paolfio Com
pany to construot a ' divert through Its
property on Lane t net.

sented by the neces-ary two-thirds of
the affected property owners.
- TO REVISE T'iE WARDS.
In view of the far .hat the city lim
its are to be extendi l under the new
charter whioh goes i ito effect on May
18th, it was decic d to revise the
boundaries of city w irds so as to in
clude tbe new territ'iy and make pro
vision for additional counollmen. A
committee consisting of Messrs. Sykes,
Rice and Mlcelli was appointed to se
cure a surveyor and prepare plans of
tbe proposed new ward boundaries for
the consideration of the council as a
whole.

Charred Remains of a Human
Body Near Glendale.

Charred remains of an unknown man
were discovered in a smouldering fire'
near the railroad track just south of
the R. R. bridge a mile north of Glen
dale Monday, by Ed. Holt?., a track
walker. From the evtdenoe so far at
tained there seems no doubt that a
murder was committed there Sunday
night, but by whom or from what mo
tive is still as deep a mystery as is the
identity of the unfortunate victim.
Blood-stains and other evidences
show that the struggle for life was be
gun on the railroad track. The body
was then dragged from outside the rail
down an embankment to a stump and
soemlngly allowed to rest there for
awhile. Numerous bloodstains on
sticks, stones, grass and earth speak
eloquently of the desperate encounter
which there took place. From there
the body was taken to tbe fenco and
thrown over, but no marks were left on
tbe fence, indicating that there were at
least two assailants. Tho body was
then placed botween two logs lying two
or three feet apart and a fire built upon
it. There are evidences that a plenti
ful supply of bark and wood was placed
upon the fire, causing an Intense heat,
the evident intention being to destroy
all trace of the crime. An old hat
found doubled up and jammed into a
stump was the only thing discovered
from which to gain a possible clew to
tbe identity of tbe victim. This, bow.
ever, contained no marks to show
where It came from or who was its
owner.
The charred fragments of tbe body,
including the skull which is said to
have been crushed, were gathered up
and taken to Glendale, under direction
of Justice R. K. Montgomery, who em
panelled a coroner's jury to investigate
the mysterious crime.
Sheriff McClallen, who was at Glen
dale today attending the Inquest, tele
phoned to DlBt. Atty. Brown this after
noon that there wore so far practically
no developments further than outlined
above.

Records are going to smash in quick
succession in the immigration reports.
A week ago last Friday the record tor
immigrants landing at Ellis island
reached 0000, beating tbe previous rec
ord 2000. Last Friday tbe record
was broken in its turn, 11,855 Im
migrants "being brought in. One
steamer brought passengerB to the
number of 3080, that being the great
est number that ever oume Into the
port on a single vessel.
Tbe new S. P. R. R. time card will
go into effect on Thursday, May 4, at
12:01 a. m. After that date the north
bound local train No. 12, will arrive
hero at 0:50 a., m. and depart at lft
o'clock. Tbe southbound local, No.
11, is unchanged, arriving here at 6:25
p. m, and departing at 6:45. The
northbound overland train No. 10, will
arrive at 11:20 p. m. and depart at 11:35.
The southbound overland, No. 15, will
arrive at 4:23 a. m. and depart at 4:40.
The new card makes no provision tor
extending the Albany local to Eugene,
nor any changes of diner service on the.
