The woollen mill at Eugene is to be
moved to Hood river.
Albany's population is given officially
as 3328 in the cliy limits. There 1b
claimed to be 2000 la the suburbs.
During the spring 36 dogs have been
poisoned in Albany, the heart of the
Chinese pheasant center of Oregon
Many of the poisoned dogs were
registered and valued highly. Efforts
to apprehend the poisoners have proved
fruitless.
Peter Graber, an old and respected
citizen of Salem, committed suicide Fri
day by hanging himself in a barn.
Worry over the death of his wife,
which occurred fouryears ago, was the
cause of the act. 1 -
Tells of Nevada Klondike.
Goldfleld, Nevada, which with Tona
pah, 27 miles north, and Bull Frog, 80
miles south, is attracting the attention
of the whole country at the present
time on account of the newly discovered
gold mines in that section, is turning
out ores of phenomenal value, accord
ing to the statement of Horace J.
Pullen, a mining engineer, -formerly of
Roseburg, and who is in the city today.
Mr. Pullen is now located at Goldfields,
where he is interested in some valuable
mining property.
"Some of the ores yielded by the
mines range in value from $1,000 to as
high as 800,000 per ton," said Mr.
Pullen, speaking of Goldfields, par
ticularly. "The higher grade ores are
so rich that they are shipped to the
smelter at Salt Lake by express and
under heavy guard. Thousands of
dollars worth of the lower grade ores
are piled up on the dumps awaiting re
duction by the milling process. So
rich is one claim in particular that the
owners had to build an 8-foot fence
around it to keep the public from carry
ins away a fortune in samples alone.

I thousand at Goldfields, and an area of

Mr. Pullen advises people without
capital to stay away from the new
Klondike. "The opportunity for the

Nevada camps is past, because every
available locality has been thoroughly
staked out," explained Mr. PuKen.
j "But the man with capital has all the
chances in the world. One claim near
Goldfields which recently sold for $3,-
400, has since yielded $300,000 worth of
ore."
Mr. Pullen says the reports of the re
cent epidemic of typhoid-pn6umonia at
Tonapah were greatly exaggerated.
Accompanied by his wife Mr. Pullen
leaves for Goldfields this evening.
Mr. and Mrs. Fendel Boatty, of
Grangeville, Idaho, are the guests of
Mr. and Mrs. John R. Sutherlin, of
this city. Mr. and Mrs. Beatty are
former residents of Oakland, Douglas
county. They have been spending the

Williams and Lauth to Hang.
Salem, Or., April 28. By Supreme
court decisions delivered at noon
today, Norman Williams, murderer
of Alma Nesbitt, in Wasco county, and
George Lauth, murderer of Loretta B.
Jane9, at Oregon City, must hang.
Williams was convicted of one of the
most atrocious crimes in the history of
the state, and was sentenced to death
by the circuit court for Wasco county,
June 1,1904.. Evidence showed that be
killed Miss Alma Nesbitt and her
mother, Mrs. Louisa J. Nesbitt, In a
most cold-blooded and brutal manner,
on his homestead ranch, about 20 miles
from Hood River, on the night of
March 8, 1900, for the purpose of secur
ing possession of a homestead claim
taken by MIsb Nesbitt, adjoining his,
and to cover up other crimes which he
is alleged to have committed against
the latter. v
Lauth was 'convicted in the circuit
court of Clackamas county for the mur
der of Loretta B. Jones in September
of last year, in a fit of jealous rage be
cause she had absndoned him.
(Lauth's victim was formerly a resi
dent of Roseburg.)
