Volney McKean left this morning for
Portland to visit with his brother,
Elmer, and cousins, Clyde and Harry
Hatfield, who are attending business
college. All four boys will return
home In two weeks, the three students
to spend a vacation.
On Tuesday evening, May 2, Thos,
S. Handsaker, of Iowa, will deliver his
popular lecture-reclta!, "Grit", at the
Christian church in this city. Mr.
Handsaker is said to be an entertainer
of a high class. Both his elocutionery
efforts and his singing are said to be
very pleasing.
Joseph Bloberger, of the firm of
Hoover and Bloberger, proprietors of
the Cass Street meat market, has sold
his interest in that business to G. E.
Blew, the Southern Pacific conductor
o( this city. Mr. Bloberger will be re

Messrs. W. H. Fisher, Frank G. Ml-
cell! and A. A. Bellows returned this
morning from Portland, where they at
tended' the annual convention of the
Oregon Development League and also
visited the Lewis and Clark fair
grounds. The League is doing aotive
work for attracting settlers and invest
ors to Oregon and have succeeded in so
curing one fare rates for the round trip
for those who will come. At the fair
grounds there is great activity and the
exposition will prove to be a far larger
institution than was at first anticipated.
Space has been reserved for a Douglas
county exhibit but It must be occupied
without delay or it will be assigned to
some other county, as there is a heavy
demand for exhibit space. The fair is
being extensively advertised, with the
aid of the transportation companies,
not only throughout the United States
but In foreign countries also, and thou
sands upon thousands of visitors aro ex
pected during the Fair season. Port
land people are making great prepara
tions for the accommodation of these
visitors and arrangements are now
completed for taking care of 80,000 at
onetime. It now, behooves Douglas
county people to act quickly in prepar
ing and placing their exhibit so as to
attract settlors and investors to this
county.

W. W. Chappell, who with WV D.
Cbaddock was formerly In tho saloon
business here, was In Roseburg on busi
ness today. Messrs Chuppel and Chad
duck are now conducting a saloon and
hotel at Falls City, Polk County. The
hotel will bo taken in charge next
week by M. Butterfleld, who formerly
conducted a restaurant h;re and who
will leave for Falls City with his family
In a few days.
Early this afternoon fire destroyed
the upper portion of S. I. Thornton's
bouse, situated on the bill, abutting the !
east end of Douglas stroet. That the
building was not entirely consumed by i
the fl times is due to the prompt work of j
the local Are department members, j
who reached the scene after a long 1
run, within five minutes after the
alarm was sounded. The houso v as
occupied by Mrs. Frank Brothers, who
with the assistance of neighbors, saved
nearly all of her household furnishings.
The origin of the fire was not learned
as Mrs. Brothers, who, with her little
child, were the only persons in the
house at the time the fire started, be
came so hysterical that it was im
possible V get a statement from her.
The house was Insured for 100, which
will probably cover the loss.
