Miller has over 400 younfj turkeys already batched, and proposes to outdo all her former efforts in raiB ing the great American bird for the fu ture holidays. Mrs. Win. Love is quite ill, and W. A.. Roberts is laid up with a severe cold. A. E. Shiria will build the planing mills of the Skelley Lumbering Co. at the terminal of the company's flume which now lacks less than one and a half miles of completion. The Hayhurst school, undor the di. rection of Miss Mabel Wilson, is well and systematically managed and is a credit to the lady In charge. Mr. W. II. Sykes will leave the early part of next week on his annual trip to his home in McKeesport, Pa., on busi ness and to visit his family. Clarence Fegles aad family are now among the solid people of Skelley. Mr, Fegles is an accomplished musi cian, and now that be is with us, the town can boast of possessing a very fair orchestra for all purposes. The hay erop promises to be unusual ly abundant this yoar, and both full and spring sown grain are looking very pleasing to the farmers. Thero Is a potato famine in this boo tion of the county. Stearns, of Portland, are visiting relatives here. They spent the winter in California and wilt return home soon. Mrs. Sarah Smith died of apoplexy on the Kleoke farm near this city, Wednesday, aged about 57 years. In terment in the Citizens' cemetery yes terday afternoon. Mrs. John Hardie and daughter, Mrs. E. A. Caton, returned from Port lapd Sunday evening, accompanied by their husband and father, John Hardte, of Norman, Oklahoma. In a few days Mr. and Mrs. Hardie will return home. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Sheppard, daughter and son, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, were guests of Mr. Sheppard 's brother, Sam Sheppard, a oouple of days the first of the week. Mr. and Mrs. Shep pard will visit their daughter in Idaho, before returning home. Last Saturday William Mlckie pur chased 14 head of fine work horses from E. G. Young & Co. He will pur chase a few more In Roseburg and ship them all to Los Angeles. Grant Taylor has sold a wagon load of white-oak lumber to J. H. Miller. This timber was sawed at Winchester and is first quality in every respect. Miss Nora Cheney, of Galesvllle, who has had employment in the woolen mills at Salem, returned home Tuesday morning. Mr. and Mrs Jesse Clements have moved to the Gold Flat mine and ex pect to spend the summer in that pleasant locality. Miss Alonla Snodgrass has gone to Montague, Calif., where she has secured employment as cook at a sheep ranch. J. F. McGregor, who since last sum mer has been blacksmith in our city, has sold out his Interest to Elmer E. Totten, who will continue the work at the Totten blacksmith shop. Mr. Mc Gregor intends leaving on Monday, but his destination is not yet fully decided. State Game Warden Baker, of Cottage Grove, was In town Monday taking sn important part in the trial of W. E. Frost, who was arrested by Deputy Game Warden Marvin for the killing of deer out of season. The case came up for trial In the evening before Jus tice Montgomery. Frost entered a plea of not guilty and called for a jury trial. The evidenco was conclusive and he was fined $25 und costs, the total reaching 808. 10. More than seventy deer hides were found in his possession. Prof. Lee Cannon, of Roseburg, has temporarily taken charge of the Gleu- dale public school, relieving Prof. Mc- Connell, who is 111 at his home at Merlin. In jumping off of the sidewalk at a place where it is very high to get out of the way of a fractious horse, Mrs. K. U. McClenahan sustained a double fracture of her left foot last Friday.
