KLAMATH C AL.L.S, ur.t April .iu. rt. report reached here last night from the Lorella district, about 35 miles In a southeasterly direction from Klamath Falls, that two men had been killed in the range war existing in the eastern part of the county. The men are sup posed to have been herders, but no names could be learned, and people here are anxiously waiting details of the killing ' from the- remote stock country, with which there is no means of communication except by courier. The trouble is supposed to have taken place at David Ebler's camp, not far from Lore 11 a. Ebler's camp was burned on the night of April 13, fol lowing the slaughter of 00 sheep be longing to Creed McKendree, a sheep man ranging in the same district. While the actual marauders were un known, the. sheepmen shrewdly sus pected the men really back of the shooting. ' , After his cimp was burned Ebler armed his employes thoroughly and put a olose guard over his bands, the announcement being made that further attempt to drive him out would mean trouble. The Sheriff and Deputy Sher iff of Klamath County left for the east ern border several days ago. Neither has been beared from since. From killing sheep to killing men appears to have been a quick step, as last news from Lorella stated that the temper of the opposing factions was at danger point. Cheated Death. The work has been steadily in progress since July 1, 1B03, and is not , yet fully completed, the engineers still being employed in the vicinity of Cres cent City, Calif. Their work is very complete, and by that route it is said that nearly a water-level grade can be had all the way between San Francisco and Portland. It is not known when the construction work will begin, but the company may take it up within a few months, or may deoide to let it go over for another year. It is reported on what is said to lie reliable authority that S. P. R. R. officials in San Francisco admit that Towne's Opinion of Roosevelt. Washington, April 25 Charles A. Towne whs has been elected to the Fifty-ninth Congress from New York city, after serving from -Minnesota as both Senator and Congressman, dissents from the view that President Roosevelt is a Democrat in the modern sense. "The President, on the contrary, is ah autocrat," he said today, "and the danger is that he will set a precedent for the benevolent dishonest. He may do things that have no warrant of law for what he regards as the public good, but his example may be urged by some successor who is animated by less worthy motives. My idea of a Demo crat is one who Is not transcending the limits of the constitution or using bis own personality in the debates of the Government. There are reasons why I should be bound to deny party fellow ship with Mr. Roosevelt, even If ready to admit that he Is at the zenith of bis fame and that the plaudits of the nation are his." Salem, Oregon, April 27. The county grand jury, which haa been in vestigating the matter, will tomorrow return indictments against & number of persons who are alleged to have fraudulently acquired tracts of state land. Owing to the inadequacy of the state laws and the limited jurisdiction of this county grand jury, which can only return Indictments for crimes committed in this (Marion) County, many of the alleged swindlers will escape. O trier counties, however, are likely to take up the matter, and it is believed this Investigation will rosult, eventually, in the restoration of hun dreds of thousands of acres of land to the state. Odd Fellows1 order, including the Re bekah branch, now has a membership of nearly 2,000,000, which makes it the greatest fraternal order In the world, leading all other orders by more than 500,000 members. The Odd Fellows number 1,436,102, and the Rebekah branch number 447,587. The former was instituted in the United States in 1819 with five members, and the branch was instituted in 1S50. In Oregon the OddFellowb had 11,209 in 1004 and the encampments 2510. LOCAL NEWS. Odd Fellows Celebrate. In common with appropriate observ ances throughout the whole United StateB, the 8Gth anniversary of the founding of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows was jointly celebrated at Myrtle Oroek Wednesday by members of the order of that place and of Canyon villeand Riddle. The ladles' auxiliary, the Rebekahs, of those lodges, also participated. The ceremonies were held in the South' Methodist church. Arrangements had been previously made to hold the ceremonies in the outer air, but the prevailing cold wind caused abandonment of this plan and the assemblage repaired to the church. Exercises, consisting of recitations and vocal and instrumental music, and followed by an interesting oration by Rev. Gardner, of Junction City, com prised the forenoon program. Hon. D. S. K. Ruick was chairman and Hon. Willis Kramer marshal of the day. In the afternoon the time was principally taken up with speech-making by Various members of- the order, and social enjoyment. An unconfirmed rumor is current here to the elfect that a great naval battle has taken place be tween the Russian and Japanese lleets off tbe coast of Siatn, resulting in the ) j loss of several Japanese warships. Prior to this rumor, a dispatch was received from Saigon announcing that the fleets of Admiral Rojestvensky and j Admiral Nebogatoff had effected a i junction. Two crates of Oregon strawberries, the first of the j season, reached Portland Monday morning from Myrtle Creek, Douglas ! county. They sold for 8(1 a crate of 24 ! boxes. The fruit was of fair size, good : color and had the flavor peculiar to Oregon, which makes them a favorite with berry-consumers. This fruit is fully three weeks ahead of tbe usual time for Oregon berries to ripen, and its arrival at this time shows that Myrtle Creek climate and soil aro favorable to their rapid growth. J. A. Fenn, secretary of the Umpqua Coal Co., in this city. These samples were recently taken out of the lower vein of the oompny's mine near Elk-' ton, by Mr. Jas. Hildeburn, who, with Mr. A. Abraham, a fow days ago Bhip ped about a ton of this coal to Portland where it will bo placed on exhibition at the Lewis and Clark fair. The mine now has two well-developed veins, each several feet In thlcknoss, and the samples mentlonod represent the uni form quality of the lower vein. At the present time the question of transporta tion Is the most serious drawback to active operations, and this will be solved by the building of the Drain and Coast railroad. A meeting of the com pany will be hold soon to determine what will be their next movements.
