A strange example of race merit re appearing Is cited by the St. Louis Post Dispatch. That newspaper says: "It is well known that Field Marshal Oyama Is the descendant of an Irish king named Q' Yam a, who left the green Isle several hundred years ago. Oku Is a member of the famous O'Kcough family. These are facts familiar' to antiquarians. But that Kuropatkin was anything but a Russian will be news even to students of the origin of things. In . 1G91 Sir Dermott Carew left Ireland and went to France. His son Patrick Carew, became a general In the French army. His son Patrick Carew went into the Austrian service, distinguished himself in battle with the Turks and was granted large landed estates In Hungary by the grateful emperor. This Carew bad a son, also named Patrick, who entered the Rus sian service. In Russia the surname Is placod beforo the Christian name. He was known as Carew Patrick, which readily yielded to phonetic re quirements and became Kuropatkin. The present general is eighth or ninth In descent from Sir Dormott Carew, 1010. It is a Btrange oxample of race merit reappearing. And remember that, since the Irish aro the ton lost tribes, it follows that the beroos of tho war in the oast, victors and vanquished, are of the blood of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Truth is, Indeed, stranger than fiction. Happy Is he to whom it comes In forms of pleasing surprise." Last Nope Vanished. When leading physicians said that W. M. Smllhart, of Pckin, la., had Incurable consumption, his last hope vanlshod; but Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, kepi him out of his gravo. (Published by rtrjuest.) Portland Telegram: A bill recently passed the Nebraska Legislature for the purpose of suppressing Christian Science practice. Governor Mickey has vetoed the bill, on the ground that it is class legislation and unconstitu tional. Governor Mickey's course should be commended, and the action of the Leg islature condemned. There is alto gether to much legislation of this Bort, prompted by narrow-minded intoler ance, and religious or moral bigotry, It is about time that men recognized the fact that man has a right to his own opinions, no matter what they may be, and a right to do what he pleases, so long as he does not inter fere with the equal rights of other men. Christian Science is a religion, and as such is protected by the Constitu tion of the United States. And quite apart from the legal rights afforded by the Constitution, the fact that people honestly believe in it is sufficient rea son why itB followers should be uomo' tested. Of course It is claimed by opponents tbat Christian Science is opposed to medical knowledge. But what is medi cal knowledge? There is no such thing, There is not a single disease, not even of the simplest nature, that a reg ular practitioner is certain of curing by means of his drugs. It is highly questionable whether diseases are cured by modern drugs any better than they were cured by drugs used in Egypt and Greece, drugs which no physician would think of using today, That surgery has made wonderful pro gress during the past hundred years may be readily admitted, but the same can be hardly be said for the so-called science of medicine. Now Christian Science, like homeop athy, may be true or may be false. But people believe in it, just as other people believe in homeopathy, which is equally opposed to old-school prac tice. And if a man desires to be treat ed by Christian Science methods he has a right to be, and no Legislature, or tyrannical majority of men, has any right to provent him from receiving such treatment. But people claim that a wrong is done to children by compelling them to recelvo this treatment if their par onts happen to be Christian Scientists. This would be true, if it could be Hhown that a practitioner of other schools could cure tho childron. But no practitioner knows when called to attend one of those cases whether he can curoor not. So this objection falls to tho ground. While the metaphysics of Christian Science are open to question, there is no doubt in regard to tho elllcacy of C.irlstlan Sclonco treatment in certain cases. Christian Science has cured dis eases. Probably It Is safe to Bay that It cures as many of them as uny other theory of medical treatment has done, It Is certainly un interesting experi ment, and no one but a narrow-minded bigot will desire to see it suppressed Every honest experiinentor should be given a chance to show what he can do, and this Is all that Christian Scien tist demands. lyon's French Periodical Drops Strictly vegetable, perfectly harmless, sure to accomplish DESIRED Kli5ULT5.
