In favor of the Japanese is the expe
rience of the personnel of the various
ships and the sorvice their ships have
seen. The Washington Post has it that
at least four of tho Russian battleships
are new, and their faults bavo never
been found, unless Rojestvensky dis
covered them while in the Indian
ocean. On the othor hand, the Japan
ese have been fighting with their war
ships for over a year, and have un
doubtedly seen all of their weak points
and oorrected them.
The outcome of the battle, if battle
there finally bo, is awaited with great
interest by tho entlro world.

Mining on South Myrtle.
At the Continental mine, 12 miles
from the town of Myrtle Creek, there
are now about 1,000 foot of tunnel and
shafts already completed: There are
ten men employed, working two shifts
dally, who have sunk a shaft striking
the main tunnel 110 feet below the
surface, 300 feet from the entrance of
the tunnel and are sinking another 100
feet. The shaft is twolve feet In diame
ter. Therd are 100 tons of ore sacked
and ready for shipment, which will be-

Train Wrecker Again Caught.
Salem, April 23. Superintendent C.
W. Jaraesof the penitentiary, received
a message from the chief of police of
Lewiston, Idaho, yesterday notifying
him that one George Richardson had
been arrested over there and asking if
such a man was wanted here. Rich
ardson made his escape from the prison
here in 1899 while serving a term of
years for wrecking a train at Rice Hill
in Southern Oregon. No trace of him
has since been heard until yesterday,
when the telegram was recived from
Lewiston. Superintendent James noti
fied the chief of police of Lewiston of
the facts and advised him to hold Rich
ardson. It is quite probable that be
will be brought back here without the
use of a requisition.
