SIGHTED Several Colliers are Captured by the Japanese British Vessel Searched. Special to Evening Review. London, April 17. Reutars has a report from Saigon stating that the Japanese have captured a large num ber o Russian colliers aloog the coast of French Indo China. Lloyd's agency has a dispatch from Singapore saying the German steamer Devowangee re ports passing the Russian fleet on Ap ril 14th in latitude 13 north . The ves sels sighted were lying to. VESSEL WAS SEARCHED. Hono Kong, April 17. The steam ship Brynhilde, from Bangkok, reports being stopped and searched by three Russian cruisers on Friday, 60 miles south of Cape Padaran. No contra band goods being found, the vessel was allowed to proceed. Cape Padaran is 150 miles northeast of Saigon. The course of the.veBsels Indicates that the fleet Is headed for the Formosa straits. A portion of the Russian fleet was seen Sunday in Turan bay, 350 miles north of Kamrahn bay. FOR FOURTH SQUADRON. St. Petersburg, April 17.- A large number of naval officers have been ordered to Libau for taking charge of the Fourth Russian squadron to be sent to the Far East. RUSSIA PRODS THE LION . St. Petersburg, April 11. It is rumored the Baltic squadron met and engaged two- BritiBh cruisers ' in the China Sea under the impression they were Japanese, and sank them. VICTORY OR DEATH Paris, April 16. A telegram from St. Petersburg to the Echo de Paris, says that Admiral Rojestvensky's lost telegram before leaving Nossibe was singularly laconic and eloquent. He wired. ' "Will not telegraph again before the battle. If 1 am beaten you will learn it through Togo. If I defeat him, I will announce it to you." The Telegram was accepted to mean that the Russians seek victory or death. NEW JAP TORPEDO BOATS Washington, April 16. Informa tion has reached Washington, through Europe, that the Japanese navy has within the last four days commissioned 10 new torpedo-boat destroyers built in Japanese shipyards, It Is believed that within six weeks 25 additional de stroyers, building under rush orders, will be put in commission. Three hundred and eighty-one mines planted by the Japanese In front of Port Arthur have been taken up and placed elsewhere. Naval Officer Acquitted. Special to Evening Review. Manila, April 17. Captain John B. Brlggs, in command of the U. S. cruiser Baltimore, which grounded off the straits of Malacca last year, has been exonerated of any blame after a court martial here. Honey this morning offered proof to show that the late Fcdoral' grand jury, which returned so many indict ments, was a legally constituted body and that Its proceedings were regular. Objections were filed by the defense aud the court adjourned until tbis afternoon. Senator Edwin Mayes, E. K. Brown, and Daniel. Clark plead not guilty to the charges against them. The court room was crowded, Including distinguished defendautsand prominent members of the Oregon bar. WILLIAMSON ARRAIGNED. Demurs to Indictments What Land Fraud Cases Have Cost. Portland, April IB. In the United States District Court this morning, Congressman J. N. Williamson Died demurrers In connection with the two indictments returned against him by the recent Federal Grand Jury, while his partner, Dr. Van Gesner, and ex United States Comminsionor Marlon R. Biggs, alleged co-consplrutors, entered pleas in abatement. All the matters at Issue will come up for bearing next Monday morning in cojunctlon with the rest of the land fraud cases. Dis trict Attorney Heney objected to the pleas In abatement and the demurrers will be argued later. Binger Hermann hi billed to appear and plead to the three Indlotments charging him specific acts of conspir acy. HOLMES. At the Oregon Soldiers' Home, in West Roseburg, April 16, 11105, Henry IP. Holmes, aged 73 years, of asthma. Deceased was a veteran of the Rogue Rlvor Indian war of 1855-50. He was admitted to the Home from Clackamas County in October, 1001. Two nieces residing near Oregon City are the only known surviving relatives of Mr. Holmes. ' 1 The funeral was held at the Home this morning. KUBELL. Near Oakland, Oregon, April 15, 1005, Mrs. Luoindia R. Ru belle, aged 82 years, 0 months, 9 days. She was an Oregon pioneer of 1852 and settled near Fair Oaks in this coun ty She was the mother of Mrs. Dwlght Reed, of Oakland, and a sister of G. W. Hill, of Wilbur. A suitable obituary will appear later. MARRIED DIED. RYAN. In RoBeburg, April 15, 1005, Mrs. Gortrutle Ryan, aged 20 yours,' of peritonitis. Deceased was the wife of Henry Ryan, the well known Southern Pacific fireman, of this city. She had been ill only a short time and her death oc casioned profound regret among her many . friends. Besides her husband, to whom- she was married only seven months ago, Mrs. Ryan is survived by her parents', Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Johnson, of Woodburn; two sisters, Mrs. J. H. Wagenblast, of tbis city, and Miss Frankie Johnson, of Woodburn, and three brothers, Edward N. and Fred L. Johnson, Southern Paclflo firemen, of this city, and Dayle Johnson, of Woodburu.
