THOUSANDS BURIED ALIVE.
Awful Results of an Earthquake in
British India.
Lahore, India, April 7. Details ara
constantly being received from all
parts of British India, which show that
the disaster caused by the earthquake
of two days ago is very much greater
than at lirst supposed. Thousands of
lives have been lost and the property
loss has been proportional. Whole
towns have been shaken down and
many noble structures are in ruins.
At Dharmmsala 400 men of the
Seventh Gurkah regiment and 70 of the
First Goorka regiment were buried
alive and their rescue is impossible.
Outside of the troops 1,400 natives are
reported as killed or injured and many
of the injured will die. The nine Euro
peans injured have all died. There is
nob a bouse left in the vicinity that
does not show marks of the earthquake,
The town of Kangra with a popula
tion of 50,000 is reported to have been
ruined by the earthquake and the loss
of life Is stated to be enormous. Near
ly all buildings have been wrecked and
thousands buried alive with small pros
pect of being rescued.
Details from outlying district are fil
tering in slowly and sbow that the cas
ualties caused by the catastrophe have
been underestimated. Reports have
been received from but a few places and
it 1b expected that when full informa
tion comes in the magnitude of the dis
aster will stir the entire civilized
world.

Big Strike in Chicago.
Chicago, April 7. Two hundred
teamsters employed by the mail order
firm of Montgomery Ward & Co.
struck today in sympathy with the
garment workers, who have been on a
struggle with employers for four
months. In the belief of many labor
lenders, today's strike is the beginning
of a great contest that may involve 20,
000 drivers.
The move against Montgomery Ward
& Co. is an opening wed go by which
the teamsters hope to bring success to
tho garment workers in an effort to es
tablish a closed shop. There are 2S
employing clothing makers in the city,
and it Is the purpose to extend tbe team
sters' strike gradually until it includes
all of the 23 firms. Indications are that
the strike will not stop even then, bub
will involve many other brunches of the
teaming industry.

Alberta province, in the Northwest
Territory, Canada, where a number of
Douglas county people have gone dur
ing tho past few ye art, is graced with
fine, summer weather at tho present
time according to a letter received
here by James Mills, who owns a
homestead in that country. The letter
states that the province is in a flourish
ing condition in every way and that
the tide of Immigration, not only from
other pacts of Canada but from the
Uuited States as well, contluues
steadily. Five years ago the country
was practically imkown. Today its
populace reaches well Into the thou
sands. Tbe country is rich in coal and
timber and stock-raising and farming
are carried on extensively. Edmonton,
the principal city, has a population of
,500 and its business houses Include
six branch banks.

TREES IN A WIND.

The big wind that passed over St
Paul recently .taught much about what
trees to plant for permuueut shade
and other effects. One miut easily
have expected tiie softer varieties of
wood to break first, but would hardly
be prepared to see the ense with
which box elders and soft maples nre
uprooted. When it is let alone the
former likes to branch near the ground,
and it ciui be seen on the prairie more
like a gigantic bush than like a tree.
This habit of growth would not call
for any great spread of roots except in
capturing nourishment, an operation
In which the tree Is supposed to excel.
We have known n tree of the kind to
send Its roots to almost any length In
the seams of a quarry, yet in well sod
ded and watered lawns It Is the first
to give way at the root. It should
be less missed than any other sort
Among the Indigenous trees tho elms
hold an intermediate position, furnish
ing not so much more resistance to the
winds than the sort mentioned. This is
a pity, they being such universal fa
vorites for shade trees.
Coniferous trees aud the larches seem
to bold up well against winds, as do
the ashes aud white walnuts, although
so few of the latter nre used for shade
that one cailuot speak with confidence
of their performance. Coming to trees
of slower growth and harder wood, the
hard maples in the track of the storm
seemed to suffer much more than their
numbers would warrant, but the oaks
preserved their reputation for sturdi
ness, while the humble hackborry bold
lis own ns well as any.
By the way, oaks of some varieties
nre by no means so slow of growth as
Imagined by some people, nor are luey
so averse to the ways of civilization ay

by its village improvement society.
Some members of tho society nrrived
with tennis, others came with mowing
machines, nnd still others came with
scythes, shovels, rakes and hoes. This
nrmy started out to make an onslaught
on the unsightly spots iu the village.
A distribution was made of the work,
nnd each person was given bis par
ticular task. Work was begun at one
end of the village, and a clean sweep
wns made. Wherever there wns a va
cant lot grown with rank weeds the
scythe nnd tbe rake were applied aud
the lot put In apple pic order. On

used.
