Seventeen deaths from cerebrospinal meningitis were reported during Thursday in Greater New York, making a total for the week this year of 82. An average of 25 developing cases have been, re potted daily. Special to Evening Review. Portland, April 8. Tlie Federal Grand Jury, which has be 3a investi gating the Oregon land fraud cases, bo day broke its silence of a week by re turning indictments against the follow ing persons: State Senator R. A. Booth, of Eu gene; James Honry Booth, ex-Receiver of Lhe United States Land Office at Roseburg; T. E. Singleton, of Wilbur, Or., and John, WlUiain, iilohard and Tbomas Roe, officials of the Booth Kolly Lumber Company, charging them with entering into a conspiracy with I. Thomas Agee, of Lane County, to de fraud the United States out of public lands. Agee and Singleton are related to the Booth family. Also against Frank E. Alley, ab stracter of Roseburg; A. R. Downs and E. R. Downs, of Seattle, Wash., and S. W. Turnell, of Glide, Oregon, charg ing them with conspiring with John W. Gardner to defraud the United States government out of public lands. Gardner la the notorious timber cruiser who was formerly located at Roseburg. Also against Wllliard N. Jones, Thaddeus S. Potter, H. L. Lessler and Daniel Clark, charging them with de frauding the government out of timber lands situated on the Silctz Indian Reservation district. Also against James Henry Booth, charging htm with having furnished Fredorick A. Krlbs with advance in formation to aid blm in scrlpplug oper ations while Booth was receiver of the Roseburg land office. Also agalust Coe. D. Bernard, Clar ence D. Zachary and Charles A. Wat son, charging them with perjury In connection with timber entries. Elder Not Yet Floated. Poim.A.MD, April 7. The steamer Geo. W. Elder has a greater list than she bad a week ago, and Is likely to slide off the rock on which Bhe lodged into the main channel of the Columbia. Five attempts to raise the vessel have proved unsuccessful, but the under writers have not abandoned hope of saving ber. The plan now Is to encase her In a huge canvas bag, pump the water out of the bold and then make an attempt to raise her. If this plan should fall it is not likely that further effort will be made to save ber. Even if she should be raised and taken to the drydock it Is declared that it would cost more to put ber in sea worthy condition than she would bo wortn aitor tbe woric naa oeen per formed. Singapore, April 8 (3:00 P. M.) The Russian fleet under Admiral Roj -stvensky has just passed the harbor, steaming northeast into the China sea. The fleet consists of 30 vc 'sols. BATTLE IMMINENT. London, April 8 A dispatch re ceived this auernoon from French Cochin China says: It is believed hero that the hostile fleets are not more than thirty miles apart and a battle Is expect" 1 at any moment. The an nual parade of the Horse Guards, al ways heretofore one of tne most spec tacular military ceremonies as well as social function of this year, was chiefly notable today by the absence of Emper or Nicholas and the imperial family. The Horse Guards is the Emperor's own regiment, and never before has he failed to attend Its annual parade. With the Empress, Dowager Empress and the entire court, the Emperor re mained at Tsarskoe-Selo. The only Grand DukeB who ventured out of their palaces were Nichols1, Boris and Alex ander MlcbaoItob, the first named representing the Emperor. Even Grand Duke Vladimir, commander of the military district, was not prosont, the explanation being that he was de tained at the palace on account of sick ness, The danger to the Imperial family was regarded as especially great today as It happened tbat this was the festi val of the Immaculate Connection, one of the strictest religious holidays, Railroad Casualties. Washinoton, April 7. A report of the railroad accidents In tbe United States during the months of October, November and December, 1004, has been compiled by tbe Interstate Com merce Commission. It shows that In that quarter 63 passengers and 181) em ployes wore killed and 1430 passengers and 1808 employes were Injured, a total of 212 persons killed and 3208 Injured in train accidents. Other accidents ti passengers and employes, not tbe result of collisions or derailments, bring the total number of casualties up to 14,078, of whom 1)51 wore killed and 14,027 in jured. Tbe report indicates a decrease of 178 killed and 024 injured, as com pared with the last preceding quarter. Of the total number of 53 passengers killed In train accidents, 20 were killed in one collision between a passenger train and a freight train. The total number of colllsons and de railments In the qunrtor was 2050, the financial damage aggregating $2,4011 081. The number of employes killed In coupling and uncoupling cars in the quarter was 7112 more than in the preceding three months. Sunday at the M. C. Church. Rev. G. H. A Directors Decide to Hold One at Roseburg. . IN SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR. Exact Dates Will be Set and Arrange--mcnts Made at Another Meeting May 1. A district fair will bo held-at the fair- J ; grounds one mile east of Roseburg this year. This was decided upon at a meeting of the Fair Association di--f reotors In Roseburg this afternoon.' The fair will be held about tbe middle of Septomber, the exact days to be de termined at another meeting of the di rectors to bo held in Roseburg, Mon.. day, May 1, at which time there will also be election of officers. The Roseburg Park and Fair As sociation will meeting conjointly with tbe Fair directors. After this meet ing, full dutails of the arrangements will be announced. End of Baker Saloon Fight. Baker City, Or., April 7. After three weeks of wrangling in the grand jury and two weeks of fighting In the circuit court, resulting in two convic tions, two acquittals and two hung juries, the 130 indictments againtt he whiskey men of Baker City, Sumpter, Bourne and Greenhorn, were com promised this morning by an agrec-r ment between the attorneys, the terms of which provide that Sumpter men, against whom four indictments exist, shall pay $50 oaofa where gambling is included, and the Baker City men 15 .each for Sunday, opening. . .The balance ,.. of the indlotmonts are to be dismissed on the payment of all charges. This solution of the question is most satis factory to all concerned, Including the taxpayers of the county, who were bo coming tired of the expense, and It is now believed no further difficulties will arise.
