It is as impossible to conquer the king of

the Federal Grand Jury, is the follow
ing paragraph: Ever and anon Horace
Tillard Jones, a special agent working
under the direction of Thomas 13. ts'eu
hausen, looms up prominently in the
corridor9 of the Federal building. Mr.
Jones devotes his entire time to the
investigation of various phases of the
several cases, with the exception of
three or four brief periods per day, for
the purpose of consulting his exnaust
less wardrobe and undergoing a meta
morphosis of raiment. Horace Tillard
Jones is sometimes known by tbe nom
de plume of ' The Ward McAllister ot
the Secret Service."

HEARINGS CLOSE SATURDAY
Story of Mitchell's Connection With
Big Lumber Co. Told by His
Former Secretary.:
Portland, April 6. Testimony go
ing to show that the Southern Pacific
Company sold large tracts of land to
the' Booth-Kelly Company about the
time entries were" being made upon
government lands in the purchased
district, is believed to have been given
before the Federal Grand Jury this
morning by Charles W. Eberlein, land
agent of the Southern Pacific Com
pany. This testimony is of a nature to
show a coincidence between tbe com
pany's purchase of railroad lands and
tbe entry upon government lands by
people who are supposed to have sold
their holdings to the lumber concern.
This would seem to indicate that tbe
company was interested In the entries
to confirm the government's theory of
a conspiracy.
The jury is believed to be at work on
the Booth-Kelly case with all its lateral
transactions, such as those alleged of
Cook and Jones, who are supposed to
bave Induced entrymen to file on lands,
and then transfer them for ultimate
holding by tbe Booth-Kelly Company.
It Is believed the government already
has a large amount of Inside facts by
virtue of confessions by illegal entry
men. It is claimed members of congresston
aldelegatlons' from other states than
Oregon are concerned In the alleged
gigantic conspiracies to defraud, and
that investigation in these states will
further implicate Congressman Blnger
Hermann, already under indictment.
Attention is still being devoted to the
work and record of Senator John H.
Mitchell, and It Is alleged other in
dictments agaiust him may follow,
MITCHELL AND THE B.-K. CO.
Harry C. Robertson, the foi mer secre
tary of Senator Mitchell, was the star
witness at the grand jury yesterday, so
it is said. Mr. Robertson was in the
employ of the senator for many years.
He is therefore in a position to know
the details of the senator's business
dealings.
The testimony of Robertson, so it is
said, brought out the fact tbat Mitchell
bad been a stockholder of the Booth
Kelley Land & Lumber Company from
the time of Its organization. Senator
Mitchell bad 81 shares of stock In the
Sugar Pine Land & Lumber Company.
These shares were afterwards trans
ferred to the stock of. tho Booth-Kelly
company at the time R. A. Booth
bought bis Interest In the company
from H. B. Miller, United States consul,
As the time passed, so the story Is
said to have been told, the senator dis
posed of a few shares of his stock until
he held but 7,0. Last summer Arthur
Hill, of Minneapolis, bought up a large
block of the Booth-Kelly stock from
private boldors and also interested John
W. Blodgett, of Wisconsin, in the prop
erty, with the result that the latter
bought practically a half Interest in the
plant for 8500,000. Tbe Blodgett and
Hill stock isnow voted together.formtng
the controlling Interest in the company.
This deal was made In November, 1004,
and at tbat time the senator sold his 70
shares to either Hill or Blodgett for
8710.
JURY ADJOUKN'S SATURDAY.

ing so, the life of the grand jury ox
plres by law on Saturday evening.

Belief That Linicvith is in a
Critical Position.
Judging from the unusual prompt
ness with which taxes are being paid
in Douglas county this year, there 1b
no local indication of any hard times
or closeness in money matters.
Sheriff McClallen has completed his
footings of all payments made prior to
and Including March 15, and the final
sum was turned over to County Treas
urer Dlmmlck today. It aggregates
$131,583.31, the rebates amounting to
83,937.24.
This left unpaid at tbe close of busi
ness on March 15, a balance of $40,820,
70, Footings of the payments made
between that time and April 1st are
nut yet comploted, but it is estimated
that they will approximate 81S,OC0 to
$'20,000. Most of these payments were
made on the basis of turning in half
tbe tax now and allowing the other
ball to go over until the latter part of
September when the remainder can be
paid without any costs or penalty being
added. Taxes upon which no payments
at all have been made will now be sub
ject to a 10 per oent ponaliy and 12 per
cent lntorest.
Last year tbe total tax payments
made up to April 1st were $141,042.70,
tbe rebates aggregating $4,188.00. It
is expected that the semi-annual state.
ments cf the county officials will be
out In a few days.

ory, a gardener living near Mott station,
five miles south of Slssun, bus shot and
killed Miss Annio E. Miller, a toacber
in the Mott school. lie then blew bis
own brains out. Gregory persisted In
paying attentions to Miss Miller, but
she spurned bis offer of marriage.
