The Ladies' Cemetery association ol Hagurstown, InU., is one of the unique clubs of the country. It owes Its ori gin 'to the full uro of the town council and the male population to care for the village cemetery- The little cemetery, four or five acres in extent, was a weed pntch twelve years ago. Al though loculed in a naturally beautiful spot, the place hud beeu neglected and became a reproach to the town. The town council was petitioned re peatedly to appropriate money to keep the cemetery in repair, but there was no money available, and no action was taken, says the New York Telegram. Tho malo citizens aside from holding meetings and passing resolutions did nothing. At last In desperation a few resolute women decided to hold a meeting and ascertain what could be done. 'Mrs. Carrie Stonebrukov was selected presi dent of. the Ladles' Cemetery associa tion, Miss Beilo Savoy secretary and Mrs. I'hoebe Stover treasurer. A doz en women composed the membership. The purpose was announced to be the care of tho Hugerstown cemetery, Committees were appointed to cauvasa the town for subscriptions' and eulist all men who would donate labor to clean up the place. A few dollars were niggardly given, but not one man could be found to gc out with tho women and work. These women held another meeting and ad journed to meet the following duy at the cemetery. They carried spades, hoes, scythes, axes and rakes. Bushes, briers and weeds were attacked with determined if not sturdy hands. From day to day the women toiled. Men camo sheepishly to the scene, but were not allowed to take their hands out of their pockets nor linger on the premises. It took weeks to finish tiie work, arid every duy saw the deter mined women at their task. They not only cleared out the weeds and, wild bushes, but established walks and grades, laid out drives. Hrpiared up the lots and put In cornerstones and pre pared a record of tho entire cemetery. 1 '.of ore the li.v.t Hummer was over the cemetery was transformed Into a place of beauty, and its name was changed to West l.uwn. Autumn hues were on tint trees when tho last stroke was nmde. It was a time for thanksgiving, and it was suggested that a dinner be fipreud In the largest place in town. The Idea took at once, and when Thanksgiving day dawned it was to be hold a remarkable feast day. Tho men showed tiieir true natures. They paid so well for that dinner that after all expenses were paid an amount remaluiM in the treasury RUtllelcnt to keep the cemetery In repair for tho en ouing year. Subsequently It was pro posed to make the association a perma nent organization to care for the cem etery. From that year to tho present no Thnnksgivlng has been missed. The dinners have become an Institution not oniy for llngeratown pe.tple, but for every one who has moved to another place. The question of preserving shade trees from the depredations of caterpil lars Is being solved in Salem, Mass., by a plan originated by the Evening News of that city, says tho Municipal Journal and Fuglncor. In April, 1002, $80 In prizes was of fered the schoolboys who destroyed the greatest number of brown tall moth nests. Tho tlrst prize was $25; second, $15; third, 910; fourth. ?.". and twenty live prizes of $1 each. Tho contest ran from April 3 to HI, In which time 30.002 nests were collected. They were count ed by tho ladles of the women's clubs and burned by tho shade tree depart ment. The contest of 1003 continued from March 30 to April 7, whou MO.'Jl" nests had beeu destroy oil. The city co-operated with the News In 1004, and the prizes were made: First, $."0; second, $2"; third, Slfi; fourth, $10; twenty-tive $1 and fifty $1. The contest was from Feb. 20 to March 10 and resulted In the destruction of 374,103 uests, which. It la estimated, was equal to tho destruction of 140, 077,000 cnterpl llurs. The winner of the first prize collected 52.273 nests. Town Biom Hint.
