Colfax, Wash., April 0 By the
collapse of a side will K on a bridge over
the Palouse river here la9t night a
score of young men aud women were
precipitated into the shallow stream.
Miss Mary Onstot, of Asotin, was
stunned by striking a beam and was
drowned.' Her body was recovered an
hour later. Most of the victims of the
accident live at Pullman, having cotne
to Colfax with the Pullman Glee Club
which had given a concert in the
theatre here during the evening.

today says: "Sensational disclosures
were made to the federal grand jury at
its session this afternoon when Harry
Robertson, formerly private secretary
to Senator John H. Mitchell, was
called before that body. It is said that
Robertson disclosed to the jury that
Senator Mitchell was formerly a stock
holder in the Booth-Kelly Lumber Co.,
whose transactions in public lands are
now under rigid investigation by the
grand jury.

The Result in Chicago.
Chicago, April 4. Judge Dunne was
elected Mayor by a pluiallty of 24,248
and received a majority of 045 of all the
votes cast. He also had the distinction
of receiving the greatest vote ever cast
in Chicago fora candidate for the ofllce
of Mayor. He was given 161,659 votes
out of a total of 322,378. Mr. Harlan,
the Republican candidate, received
137,411; Collins, Socialist, 20,323, and
Stewart, Prohibition, 2980.
John F. Smulskl, the Republican
candidate for City Attorney, was re
elected over his Democratic opponent
by nearly 15,000 votes. The othor
candidates on the Democratic city
ticket were elected by pluralities some
what smaller than Judge Dunne's.
Frederick W. Blockl was elected City
Treasurer and Adrian C. Anson City
Clerk.
The new City Council will probably
be Republican. The total count of
wards has not yet been completed, but
the indications are that the Republi
cans will have 36 members in the
Council to 34 Democrats.
DUNNE WILL TAKE CAR LINES.
Judge Dunne Bald tonight:
Partv lines and personalities of candi
dates were entirely forgotten in today's
election. Municipal ownership was
the one great issue before the ueonle
of Chicago today, and the returns show
very plainly bow the majority feel to
ward the private ownership of public
utilities. It is the greatest victory
municipal ownership ever won in this
country.
Every pledge that I mado during the
campaign will be kept. Chicago wants
municipal ownorsmp ana during my
tenure of oflice it will be my aim to
bring about such a condition as ranldlv
as possible. I will uppoint a corps of
engineers to make a survey. of all the
street railways in the oity, so that we
will know just how the oity, when it
secures control of the lines, will be
able to handle the proposition. I be
lieve that before many months we will
see the city of Chicago owning and
operating at least one street railway
line. The traction question depends
in a great measure on the action of the
courts, but in a case whore legal pro
ceedings are pending I will endeavor
to bring about an immediate settlement.
It will be years before the oity will
come into possession of all the street
railway franchiBes in Chicago, but we
will gradually assume control of the
d'fforent lines, and I believe the day
will come when the people will control
the entire street railway system of the
city.

Ashland, Ore., April 6. H. A
Palmer, a grocer of this city, com
mitted suicide here today by shooting1
himself. He was a 111 icte d with an in
curable cancer and this was doubtless
the reason tor his deed.

Democratic Landslide.
Denver, April 5. A Democratic
landslide struck Colorado where munic
ipal elections were held yesterday In
all cities and towns except Denver.
In Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Lead
ville, normally Republican, Democrats
were successful, as they were In the
smaller towns where, party lines were
drawn. The antl-saloon light was suc
cessful wherever made with the excep
tion of Montrose. Cripple Creek, Vic
tor, Golden and Central City were the
only towns carried by the Republicans.
ROLI.A WELLS KE-ELEOTED
St. Louis, April 6. -Mayor Rolla
Wells, Democrat, was re-elected by a
plurality of 1,423 over Talty, Republi
can. The Detnoorats elected 2(1 out of
35 officials balloted for, and the Repub
licans elected all but one councilman.
In the house of delegates the Demo
crats secured ID and the Republicans

KANSAS DEMOCRATIC.
Kansas City, April 5. Through
the aid of female voters Democrats
yesterday carried Kansas City, Kan.,
and Leavenworth, effecting a political
revolution. Wichita and Topeka
elected Republican candidutes. Frank
W. Brown, Democrat, was elected
Mayor of Lincoln by a plurality rough
ly estimated at 800.
Mrs. Elizabeth Smith, wife of Cyrus
Smith, and a highly esteemed pioneer
of Douglas county, died at her home
near Green's Station, five miles south
of Roseburg, early this morning, April
6, 190j, after an illness of eight days.
Mrs. Smith was 111 years of age.
Bright's disease, an affliction of the
kidneys, was the cause of her death.
Mrs. Smith was a member of the
family of Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Wood
ruff, both now deceased, who came to
Oregon in 1854. They settled at Clove
land, 12 miles northwest of Roseburg,
where Mrs. Smith was later married to
her husband, who Is also a pioneer and
equally as well known. The union was1
graced by eight children, of whom
seven are Hying. A son, Ernest, died
about ten years ago. The surviving
children are: George and Irving
Smith, of Portland; Mrs. Louis G.
Dumbleton, of Winchester; Mrs. C. B.
Dowden, of Crabtreo, Linn county;
Clay Smith, of Cleveland, and Cole and
Hattte Smith, who reside at the family
home. Mrs. Smith Is also survived by
three brothers, E. T. and R. A. Wood-
rulf, of Cleveland, and George
Woodruff, of Myrtle Point.
Mrs. Smith first became seriously 111
a week ago last Wednesday, Her mal
ady was aggravated by nervous disor
ders brought on by the shooting of her
daughter, Mrs. Dumbleton, by Leon
Vial, at Winchester three weeks ago.
Lust Monday Mrs. Smith relapsod Into
a semi-conscious state which last night
terminated Into a stupor from wbich
she never revived. The end having
been forseen two days ago, all of Mrs.
Smith's children were at her bedside
when 6he expired, except Mrs. Dumble
ton, whose condition, though not now
Another Battle Imminent.

St. Petersburg, April 6. Gen.
Linievltch's chief of staff reports a
Japanese detachment advancing on the
Russian position by several roods. This
may moan that hostilities on a large-
scale may be resumed shortly. No
estimate was made of the strength of
detaohemont sighted.
A Russian detachment encountered
a Japanese force near Kilch Jul, in
northern Korea, and dispersed the
enemy.
RUSSIN HEIR IS ILL.
Berlin, April 0. -The Lokal An-
zleger says the Czar's son and heir to
the Russian throne, Is suffering from,
inflammation of the ears.
