Skellcy News.
Dr. T. Tj. White, wife and son, lefi
Saturday morning on their return trip
to their home in McKeesport, Pa.
They propose to visit, Skelley again to
the Fall, and will be accorded a hearty
welcome upon their return. While
here, the Dr. wasattendlng to business,
and Mrs. White and son Allen went
trout fishing, had a boat ride, rode
down the flume on a largo square
timber, rode on the carriage while a
log was sawed, and otherwise enjoyed
themselves to their heart's content.
Rev. Father Beutgan returned to
Portland on Monday's afternoon train.
Before leaving he dedicated a giant fir
north of the mill to Mrs. T. Is. White,
and placarded the same with cardboard
to that effect. A metal card contain
ing the proper Inscription will soon be
imbedded in the tree.
. The mill company have purchased
the grounds for the terminal site of the
flume, the planing mills and for other
purposes near Drain. It is not likely
any building will be done until work on
the flume is finished; but It Is certain
the work will be pushed until all is
done, and tho Skelley Lumber Co. be
gins shipping lumber to the markets of
the Eastern cities.
Additional machinery has been
ordered for the mill at this place to in
crease Its capacity or ontput, when the
proper time comes. The proposition is
to make the mill capable of an output
of over 100,000 feet of lumber per day.
The telephone boxes and other e..
sentlals to completing the Skelley
Draln line have at last turned up, and
that line will soon be in working order.
Everybody who can is now busy
gardening. Few, if any, are sowing
grain owning -to the fact that our
farmers utilized every month during
tho past winter for that purpose.
Tho liayhurst school Is prospering.
Miss Wilson, the teacher, paid Skelley
a visit Saturday and expressed herself
as very gratified at the bright pros
pects for a most successful term.
The foundation has been put down
and tho frame work Is going up on the
fourth new residence for the mill com
pany, and the building boom has not
reached its end.
Logs are being rolled into the pond
in large numbers, and there Is (much
work going on In this line. It will be
greatly increased as time passes and
more machinery in the way of donkey
engines are brought Into use.
There was a general smile on the
facos of the men at the bunk house the
other morning during quite an ani
mated discussion, when one of them
broke In with: "There, that will do!
You are all exactly like the people on
the local telephone line; no sooner does
one person commeuce talking but all of
you take down your receivers. I have
no show. I quit." Rex.

London, April 4. The London Daily
Mirror, which is recognized as an
authority on social eveuu, states that
It has the highest authority for the
declaration that the marriage between
King Alfonso of Spain and the Princoes
of Conuaught has been arranged.
Tho Mirror states that It was stlpu
latcd that the Princess should retain
tho Protestant faith; that any sons that
might bo born of the marriage should
be brought up as Catholics and any
daughters as Protestants. It states
further that the Duke of Counuught
visited the Pope and obtained from
him the necessary dispensation.
The uunouncement of the betrothal
Is expected when King Alfonso visits

Miller Pleads Not Guilty,
Portland, April 4. Henry W.
Miller was brought into the' United
States District Court this morning, and
after waiving the reading of the indict
ment against him entered a plea of not
guilty. His case will be set later. He
is a member of the firm of Miller &
Kiocart, accused of many fraudulent
transactions in Southern Oregon. He
also got Into trouble in California in
much the same way, and for some time
has been In jail at San Francisco on ac
count of not being able to furnish bond
in an Indictment charging blm with il
legal operations In the vicinity of Red
ding. IClncart was likewise Indicted
with Miller, but has bi'en fortunate
enough to furnish bail. Miller is
confined In the county jail here, and
plainly showed the marks of his long
detention by the government.

Gardiner News.
Alured Walker was down from Scbo-
field this week, bringing a load of cas
oarla bark, which was stored here for
subsequent shipment.
E. Snell and son, of Parker Creek,
west of Drain, have been up Smith
river, looking after stock, and today
left for Scottsburg with a scow load of
37 cattlo, mostly yearlings, which they
are taking to their Parker creek place.
The stock is from Wm. Wade's ranch,
of which Mr. Snell is a former renter.
Ralph Pyritz met with a painful ac
cident while at work at the creamery
one day last week. When about to
pass through a doorway, he slipped,
and with his arm broke the glass in
the door, cutting quite a gash in his
loft fore-arm. Dr. Jean Barber re
moved some pff'jes of glass and dressed
the wound, and Mr. Pyrltz shortly re
sumed his work.
The North Bend Harbor after re
marking that "tho Gardiner Gazette is
doing a good work for that part of
Oregon," says "It Is too badthatGardl
ner is out in the cold. We should an
nex It to Coos county." Annexation,
assimilation, monopolization shall we
never hear the last of it? We don't
want to be annexed; Douglas county Is
good enough for us yet, but telephone
connection would place us in closer
touch with our sister county, and it is
hoped the day is not far distant whon
such intercourse shall be established.
