Was A Useful Woman.
Tbe death of Mrs. Jane Stanford, at
Honolulu from a dose of poison that had
come from some unknown enemy, will
Oil every right-thinking man and
woman with sorrow, as well as the
university to whose interest she was so
strongly devoted. Though Mrs. Stan-,
ford bas been very severely criticised,
and with considerable justice, from an
academic standpoint, because of certain
restrictions on professorial freedom, it
should not be forgotton that she was
undoubtedly sincere in her actions, and
zealous for the welfare of the university,
as she conceived it.
As a people, we Americans are alto
gether too censorious. Both Leland
Stanford and his wife were criticised
because in founding a university they
saw fit to have it run in some measure
after their own ideas, ana not in ac
cordance with ideas which did not meet
with tbeir approval. But it did not
occur to people that the founding of
the university, with its magnificent en
downment, was a voluntary act, which
need not have been done. There was
no law of tbe universe and there was
no law of the land which compelled
Leland Stanford to give his money for
the education of youth. But he did give
it, and Mrs. Stanford, instead of oppos
ing his action, as so many women would
have done, not only assisted him, but
after his .death worked hard to make
the new university an abiding monu
ment of wise philanthropy. Thirty
eight million dollars of Stanford prop
erty and coin have gone to It, and
doubtless the rest will now be added.
It was unfortunate that Mrs. Stanford
was not always able to see wherein the
higher interests of the university lay;
that she was not able to sec that no
university can take its rightful place in
the world unless" absolute freedom of
thought and speeeh shall goyera Its
councils, and utter Its message from the
professor's chair. From thlstime forth
the university will probably prosper
faster than before, but let it not be for
gotten, whenever the early defects of
the institution aro remembered, these
defects which Mrs. Stanford was large
ly resimnsible for, that the university
was born of a philanthropic impulse,
and that the woman who was often so
harshly and, from an academic stand
point, so justly criticised made many
sacrilices for its welfare, which re
vealed a love that was highly com
mendable Mrs. Stanford showed her Interest in
humanity In various charities. She
built a hospital for children in Albany,
N. Y., whose cost and endowment
amounted to $200,000, and $100,000
went to kindergarten schools in San
Francisco.
We should not forget theso things.
And now that Mrs. Stanford bas lost
her life through the foul deed of some
miscreant, the genuine nobility of her
character, despite all Intellectual mis
takes, will probably be more clearly
seen. No one knew her better than
President Jordan, and of her he said
yesterday; "All her thoughts were of
the university and of the way to make
it effective for wisdom and righteous
ness The men and women
of the university feel the loss not alone
of the most generous of helpers but of
the nearest of friends." Telegram.
