Umpqua Cold C'tiro, the only speedy and sure cure for colds, at Hamilton's. Coquille Herald; Stephen Bean was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, March 21, 1829. Ho moved with his parents to Indiana in 1839. Removed to Ohio in 1841, whore lie lived until the fall of 1843, when he started with his parents for Oregon. The winter was a severe one and the roads were so bad they bad to winter at St. Joseph, Missouri. They left St. Joseph on the 10th day of March, 1844, to resume their journey to Oregon, On and on they urged their weary oxen until they reached the John Day river in Oregon. The river was so swollen that they came near starving to death before they could cross, having sent their provisions down from The Dalles on a boat, only retaining a small amount. They finally crossed the John Day and crossed the Cascades amid enow and rain, and arrived at Oregon City on the banks of the Willamette river, in the beautiful valley of the Willamette, on the loth day of November, 1844, being the second train of immigration that ever crossed the plains. He lived over 35 years in Douulas county,, moving to Coos county in 1901, where he lived till the time of his death. He was a de voted Christian, having joined the Missionary Baptist church in 18G7. He was married to Martha Ann Allen August 13, 1854. He was the father of eleven children, nine of which survive him, and was a loving husband and a kind father. He leaves a wife, five sons and four daughters to mourn bis late demise, his wife, Mrs. S. Bean, Latnpa creek, Oregon; W. S. Bean, Harrisburg, Oregon; W. A. Bean, Co quille, Oregon; A. S. Bean and Mrs. Mary Hazard, Drain, Oregon; Mrs. Clara Burns, Tho Dalles, Oregon; Mrs. Myrtle Randall, Tacoma, Wash.; Jas. L. Bean, Edgar Bean and Mrs. J. H. Timmon, of Lampa creek, Oregon. He was sick four months, but he bore his sulforing with Christian resignation and pationco. His devoted and loving nurses during his sickness were his wife and J. L. Bean, E. M. Bean and Mrs. J. H. She was baptized into the fel lowship of the Baptist Church of Kose burg, Ore., February 18, 1903, since which, time ehe lived a consistent Christian life up to the time of her death. Just a few days before her death her pastor said, "Do you ever doubt your preparations for death?" ''Not in the least," was her immediate reply. While she is missed In the home, among her friends and by the church, our loss amounts 1.0 a decided gain for her. Let each of us live so that when our tlmo shall come we too may be able to say that out "doubts" are all gone, and Jesus, the Savior, shall take us to that happy meeting place where death shall separate us no more.
