Mrs, Reeves is reported improving frota her recent illness Messrs Steel and Taylor made a trip up the river this week to look after their Interests there. Wilbur Koss, of Roseburg, was visit ing relatives here the first part of the week. Miss Amy Miller has returned to her home In Draio, after visiting with rel atives here. Mrs. Wm. Bplker made a business 'Arip to Oakland Wednesday. Miss Verna MoKuy will leave Sun day to begin teaching school near Oakland. . F. K. Gettlns returned last week from Mod ford. Mrs. Grant Taylor returned from Oakland Tuesday, after a short visit with friends and relatives there. Oliver Spiker and Mr. Smith, from Spring Grove, attended the dance here last Saturday night. . A very pleasant surprise party was given Misses Km ma and Frances Thompson at their home In this city Friday evening, Fob. 21th. Games and amusements were iuilulged in until u lato hour, when refroshmonlH were served. All returned to their homes after spending a very enjoyable even ing. Messrs Roy Roadman, James Porter, Chas. An drews, KnalUe Pickens, James Easton, Chester Robertson, Ivan Pickens, Henry Snyder and Holgar KierulT. One Who Was There. Two Heavy Incorporations. The first corporation to organize in Oregon under the new law provided for by Senate Bill No. 244, was the Oregon Securities Company, which filed papers yesterday asking a fran chise for a $5,000,000 corporation, says Wednesday's Oregonian. It will be fol lowed today by the Oregon Southeast ern Railway Company with a capital stock of $1,000,000. These two com panies control the Bohemia mining dis trict and have formerly been op erated under charters from New Jersey, to which they paid annually 95,000 and $I,0C3, respectively. WHAT NEW LAW PROVIDES. The new law provides that corpora tions having a majority of their direct ors outside the state may become cor porators of this state and may hold mootings Outside of the state. This gives to corporations operating ex clusively in Oregon, but under outside charters, an opportunity to savo the tax in the other state and to belong to the state to which their operations are confined. NAMES OP INCORPORATIONS. The incorporators of the Oregon Se curities Company are John W. Wheel er, of Orange, Mass., president; George W. Crosby, of Atlantic City, first vice president; George French, of North Adams, Mass., second vice-president; G. B. Hengen, secretary and treasurer; John H. Pearsons, of New York, as sistant secretary and treasurer; Fred erick Etfgert, of Portland; Albert Haw kins, of North Adams, Mass. and Dr. Herbert Smith, of New Haven, Conn. The Oregon Southeastern Railroad Company extonds for 18 miles from Cottago Grove towards the Bohemia district. They are issued to show the conditions that have prevailed, dur ing the month In question, for the above period of years, but must not be construed as a forecast of tho weather conditions for the coming month. Mean or normal temperature, 41 de grees. The warmest month was that of 1889, with an average of 53 degrees. The coldest month was that of 1880, with an average of 40 degrees. The highest temperature was 81 de grees on 22nd, 1S87. The lowest temperature was IS de grees on 3rd, 1890. The earliest date on which first "kill ing" frost occurred In autumn, Oct 10. Average date on which first "killing" frost occurred In autumn, Oct. 30. Average date on which last "killing" frost occurred in spring, May 3. The latest date on which last "kill ing" frost occurred in spring, May 10 Average precipitation for the month, 3.90 inches. Average number of days with .01 of an inch or more, 15. Tho greatest monthly precipitation was 8.01 inches in 1894. The least monthly precipitation was 0.28 inches in 1885. The greatest amount of precipitation recorded in any 24 consecutive hours was 1.95 inches on 4tb, 1899. The greatest amount of snowfall re- corded in any 24 consecutive hours (record extending to winter of 1884-85 only) was 5.7 inches on 19th, 1S94. Average number of clear days, 0: partly cloudy days, 10; cloudy days, 15. The prevailing winds have been from the southwest. The averase hourly velocity of tho wind is 3.0 miles.
