Slipped From His Hand and Was Dis
charged, Killing Him Al
most Instantly.

DiLLAiiu, Oregon, March 2. The
residents of Rice Creek and vicinity
were painfully shocked on Wednesday
evening by the sudden and tragic death
of Bert Barrett, a well-known young
man of that neighborhood. In company
. with Douglas Morris he was hunting
near a place known as "Eden Prairie,"
about six miles west of Dlllard. The
fatal occurrence was purely accidental.
The young men had sat down to rest
on the edge of a cliff and were pulling
and chewing wild licorice. Suddenly
Mr. Barrett's gun a 38-55 caliber
rifle slipped from his hand and the
hammer struck a rock below him in
such a maoner as to discharge the
weapon. The ball entered the flesh on
the Inner side of the left thigh, rang
ing diagonally upward and lodging
near the left kidney, causing almost in
stant death.
The body was carried home by sev
eral men who were hurriedly called to
the scene of the accident. He was 20
years of age and uumarried. He was
well and very favorably known, being
the main supporter of his mother and
sister, who reside at Rice Creek. His
father, H. M. Barrett, lives at Glen
dale. D. J. Herstine, of Oakland, and
J. M. Henry, of Dlllard, are uncles of
the deceased.
Funeral services will be held at the
Rice Creek cemetery on Friday at 11
o'clock a. m. The griefstrlcken fam
ily have the sincere sympathy of the

Honolulu, March 2. All doubt as
to the cause of Mrs. Stanford's death
was removed today when a chemist an
nounced, after an examination, that
she had been poisoned. According to
statements made by Miss Berner and
Miss Hunt, Mrs. Stanford's secretary
and maid, the bottle of medicine from
which she drank the fatal dose had not
been opened since Mrs. Stanford sailed
from San Francisco, thus proving that
the murder was the result of an un
fathomed plot formed In that city, and
over a month ago.
Honolulu, March 1. With the dy
ing declaration that she had been poi
soned, Mrs. Jane Stanford, one of the
wealthiest andlnost charitable women
in the world, and widow of the late
United States Senator Leland Stanford,
expired suddenly last night in the
Keana Hotel. Every circumstance of
the tragic, mysterious death points to
murder, and the police have instituted
a searching investigation. The coroner
has ordered an immediate post mortem
and is confident it will reveal strych
nine in the dead woman's stomach.
Mrs. Stanford went to a picnic yester
day, returning to the hotel at ten
o'clock last night apparently in the
best of health. An hour later, after
dining, she went to her room and soon
thereafter fell to the floor groaning and
shrieking, "I've been poisoned; this Is
a horrible death," and soon expired.
The coroner was immediately notified
and gave it as his opinion that the
woman was a victim of strychnine
poisoning. A postmortem examination
has been ordered. Soon after her
arrival here Mrs. Stanford told a friend
that she left San Francisco because o'
an attempt on her life and feared
another would be made if she remained
there. She said a member of her
household was trying to kill her.
Further Investigation has developed
the fact that Mrs. Stanford drank
bicarbonate of soda last night. The
soda was bought in San Francisco. A
A portion of the soda remaining will
be analyzed, as will a number of
capsules found In her room.
San Francisco, March 1. The
detective who had charge of the investi
gation into the alleged poisoning :n
thiscity admits he is puzzled by he
strange case, being unable to discover
any motive. A discharged employe
was first suspected, but that suspicion
was sifted down until there was noth
ing in it. Mrs. Stanford was 76 years
of age. Out of respect for its founder
all work at Stanford University was
stopped at once on receipt of news of
her death.

Roseburg School District Will Have
Five Directors.
Mies Clara Dlllard, clerk of Roseburg
school district No. 4, has completed the
annual census for the current year.
The total of children of school age re
siding in the district is found to be
1010, an increase of 61 over last year. .
Under the state law i r districts
numbering over IC'00 pupils, this dis
trict now enters the first class, and
after the annual election in June will
have a board of live directors instead of
three, as in the past.

announcement of his oandldacy for gov
ernor of Oregon on the republican
tioket, was made today by Dr. James
Wlthycombe, of the Oregon Agricult
ural college, and perhaps the man most
confidently mentioned as a candidate
in the political gossip of the last sev
eral months. Dr. Wlthycombe Is com
ing out on a distinctly personal plat
form. He states broadly that he de
pends purely on the primary election
system for his nomination, and It ia
stated that he Is allied with no organi
zation or machine.

"The Japanese left has driven back
the. Russians and-occupied Kalletza,
on the Llao river, forty-five miles west
of Mukden.

RUSSIANS LOSE HEAVILY.

Steamer Oregon Fire Out,

EuitEKA,Maruh 2. Tills morning the
officers of the Oregon announced that
the Ore on the steamer was extin
guished. An hour later the steamer
was floated In mid channel and the
pumps set to work. As soon as the
water is cloared from Mie hold of the
vessel she will sail for San Francisco.
EuitEKA, Cal., March 1. Tho
steamer Oregon, which took fire up
tbo coast off Crescent City night before
last, lies beached on mud Hats, just be
low the plant of the Bendlxsen Ship
building Company, with smoke pouring
from the after skylight. The erew of
the vessel Is working hard to quench
tho flames between decks. Lines are
being sent ashore to enable the vessel
being taken still further np on the
beach, and at low water this afternoon
the steamer will be high and dry on the
sands. The vessel 1b gradually being
filled with water In the hope that the
Ore, which has smoldered along for
over 00 hours, can be subdued In this
manner.

Portland, Muroh 1. In a dispute
over collections which he had failed to
account for, S. J. Donahue, a laundry
driver, today shot and seriously tn- .
jured Alexander Orth and Bhot at J. C.
Hesse 1 brock, his employers. He then
attempted to escape but was pursued
by a mob for two blocks. When cap
ture was certain, he entered a nearby
woodshed and blew out his brains.
