Dr. Lowe, the eye sight specialist,
will arrive Monday night and will be
ready to receive bis patrons Tuesday
morning at the McClallen House. As he
will leave Wednesday night, try and
see him Tuesday if possible if you con
template visiting him.
The southbound overland, due here
at 4:23 a. m., this morning, did not ar
rive until 9:25 o'clock. The train was
delayed by a mishap which befell a
northbound freight train near Hender-
son, Lane county. A huge rock had
rolled down the hillside near enough to
the ral to "strip" one side of the en
gine of the train and forcing the cur
immediately behind to leave the track.
No other damage is reported.
While rather loosely constructed,
and handicapped by lack of sufficient
stage room on which to display the
scenery, the play of "Nettie, tbe Nbwb
Girl," afforded good entertainment for
a fair Bized audience at the Roseburg
Theatre Friday night. The play is a
series of climaxes, into the last one of
which the author seems to have put his
best efforts. The troupe includes one
of tbe cleverest novelty jugglers on the
road.
The Hawaiian Imperial Band has
been secured for the Lewis and Clark
fair. The band is composed entirely of
natives, and with the organization are
two Hawaiian women singers. It is
reported that this band rivals in merit
any musical organization in the world.
They will give daily concerts during
their stay atthe exposition. The Innes
band will open the Exposition, to be
followed in order by Libcratl, De Caprio,
the Hawaiian Imperial band, and
Ellery's band.

Pres. W. H. Dempster came over
from Drain Friday evening to attend
tho meeting of the teachers to be held
here this afternoon to arrange for an
educational exhibit from this county at
the Lewis & Clark fair. Tbe probable
veto of the appropriation bill includ
ing allowance for the Normal schools,
is awaited with great interest at Drain
as it would bo a severe blow to the
Drain scbool.
Mr. E. It. Parrott, Mrs. B. Casey and
Miss Lizzie Parrott arrived here this
morning from Tuscon, Arizona, with
the body of their sister, Miss Abbie
Parrott, who died there last Monday.
The funeral will be held from the M.
church in this city on Sunday, Feb
19, at 2 o'clock p. m. with services con.
ducted by Rev. Frank L. Moore, of
Cottage Grove, assisted by Rev. Geo.
H. Bennett, of this city. Interment
will follow in the I. O. O. F. cemetery
Some of the members of the Rose
burg High Scbool Basket Ball team re
turned this morning from their trip to
Mod ford and Ashland, and the others
will come tonight. At Medford Thurs
day night the game resulted, Roseburg
18, Medford 15. At Ashland Friday
night the game stood, Ashland Nor
mal 24, Roseburg High Scbool 18. In
the latter game the Roseburg boys
were badly handicapped by not having
suitable sboes for the very slippery
floor and It was with great difficulty
that they could keep on their feet.
Otherwise they would have won both
games. Return games are expected
soon.
Nineteen members of Alpha Lodge
No. 47, Knights of Pytbias, of Rose
burg, went to Cottage Grove this after
noon to attend the district convention
of the order for DonglaB and Lane
counties. The principal feature of the
convention will be a competitive drill
by teams from the different lodges for
the honor of representing the order in
the state at the Lewis and Clark Fair.

transient fell in with Robert Sweeney,
a miner, who came here from Glendale
Thursday morning, with $05 in his
pocket. Being of a convlval disposition,
Sweeuey permitted Harlow and his
companion to share a "good time" with
him, as a result of which Sweeney was
landed in jail with more than he could
hold. Harlow was later arrested at
the depot, where he intended to buy
ticket for Eugene with money, which,
it Is alleged, he secured from Sweeney's
person. Prior to the commencement
of this trial, Justice Long awardod Dr,
E. DuGas judgment In the sum of $8
from John Needham for medical ser
vices. The original amount sued for
was S20.
