Isaac Boyle, an early pioneer of Southern Oregon, died at his home five miles east of here ; Saturday, Feb. 11, 1903, aged 86 years. His wife, two sons and a daughter sur vive him." In the rioting at the Katharinen Iron Works at Sos novic Thursday over 100 strikers were killed or wounded. The death of Governor-general, Tchertkoff, of the province of Warsaw, is reported, caused by a wound in the leg in an earlier en counter with strikers. . Baron Hayashi, the Japan minister, reports that Gen. . Oyama states that up to Feb. 10, the 'Japanese had buried 2000 Russian corpses killed in recent battles near Mukden. ANOTHER HILL TAKEN. Tukio, Feb. 11. The hill south of Chang Chal was captured by the Jap anese on Feb. 0th, 'two companies of Russians being driven oil. Startling But True. People the world over were horrified on learning of the burning of a Chicago theatre in which nearly six hundred people lost their lives, yet more than five times this number or over 3,000 people died from pneumonia in Chicago during the same year, with scarcely a passing notice.. The story of the play is said to be decidedly away from the conventional, and one that will please all classes. There is a vein of comedy running through the pieco that is refreshing. The play Is such that It gives ample opportunity for a display of stagea craft and the result is some of the most novel effects. Philadelphia, Feb. 11.-.A fight to the death has been declared between the republican rlug ruling Phila delphia and Mayor John Weaver. Yesterday the mayor began at the in stigation of the clergy a. fight against the grafting tactics of the police. He sent out an order transferring every police officer in the tenderloin districts and dismissing every bluecoat Inter ested in giving shelter to vied. The shakeupof the police is the preliminary to a general investigation of that de partment. More than 800 policemen were af fected by last night's order. Sick Hudache. P".l Still Denies Guilt and Will Stand Trial. LEGISLATURE PERPLEXED Sew Batch of Indictments Involve Con gressman Williamson and E. D. Stratford. Washington; Feb. 12. In spite of Judge Tanner's confession and Corrob orative testimony by other important witnesses, Senator Mitchell persists In his profession of Innocence .of any wrongdoing in connection with the Oregon land frauds. While still showing the terrible strain under which he has labored for the past six weeks, the Senator is not depressed by the sensational news from Portland tonight. On the contrary, be appears in hotter spirits than usual. When shown a press dispatch telling of Judge Tanner's confession he seemed rather amused than worried Ho ap pears to regard today's developments as merely a new ohapter in what ho designates a "conspiracy to defame him." ' Senator Mitchell has no Intention whatever of resigning his seat in the Senate. He will make no change in his original plans, but will remain in Washington until March, probably un til alter the Inauguration. He will then go home and prepare to face the jury and the charges which have buon brought against him. This he intended to do regardless of Tanner's confession. WHAT WILL LEQISLATUIIE DO? Poiitlano, Feb. 12. In view of the growing evidence against Senator Mitchell, the Oregon, Legislature may not adjourn sine die next Friday, and Republicans oi the two houses will probably caucus at Salem this week to decide what to do. Such a conference is suggested by Speaker Mills, who re gards Judge Tannor's testimony as hav ing put a new aspect on the case and who leans to the belief that the Legis lature may be constrained to set a date for an adjourned session. . Following so olosely the resolution of confidence which the Oregon Legisla ture adopted, agalnstscarcely a negative voice, the oonfesslon of Judge Tanner amazes the members of that body. Several influential Legislators, who advocated adoption of the resolution, said yesterday they would not have done so had they been aware of what was impending. A soro perplexity now confronts them, and though it seemed bad enough before the resolution was adopted, now it is worse, because re consideration of rescindment would amount virtually to a declaration that tha Legislature believed In Senator Mitchell's guilt and wished him to re sign, so .that a Uopubllcan might be chosen by the Legislature for the un expired term, and not a Democrat ap pointed by Governor Chamberlain. This is the result of the long efforts of the Government officials to bring to account tho Butte Creek Land, Lumber is Livestock Company, of Wheeler County, which is said to have acquired land and done many other things in a manner contrary to law. The first. ' three named are president, secretary and treasurer and goneral manager, ' respectively, of the company. The others are named for complicity and for alleged operations In favor of tho conspiracy.
