Uon. Joseph W. Folk, of "anti
boodl fame in St. Louis, was inaugu
rated governor of M issouri on Jan. Ut-h.
Jn his new capacity he promises to
finish cleaning out the "grafters" from
' Missouri politics. In bis inaugural ad
dress to the members of the legislature
among other things he said; "Parti-
' sanship is a good thing sometimes but
patriotism is a better thing all the
time. Partisanship is well enough
when it does not conflict with patriot
ism, but patriotism is a higher virtue
than partisanship. Some of you are
democrats, somo are republicans, all
are Mlssourians. Jn the (Uncharge of
ollicial duties let us bo Missouriaus be
fore we are anything else. Do not for
get that you will be aiding the party
you may belong to most by giving the
public the highest service. You can
not help your parly by injuring the
public. One may be in private life a
democrat or a republican, but when be
stops into public ellice he becomes a
public servant a servant of all the
people."
This advice would well be heeded by
legislators and public olllcials in all
states.
