Night watchman J, W. Dent bad a
close call for his life last night when a
negro "hobo" took ashotathim at
only a few steps distant, the bullet
from the weapon barely missing his
head. Dent discovered tbe negro act
ing In a suspicious manner in front of
T. R. Sheridan's residence about mid
night. At a command from Dent to
stop, the negro assumed a waiting
posturo as if to submit to inspection.
As the officer was within a few feet of
him, the negro suddenly wheeled about
with a pistol in his hand did fired
almost point black at Dent and then
took to his heels around tbe coiner
down Stephens street. So close was the
range at which the negro fired, tbnt
the powder from the cartridge scorched
the.ollicer's face. As soon as Dent re
covered from the surprise of the attack,
he gave chase emptying his own re
volver at the fleeing form of the negro,
oooe of the bullets reaching tbeir
mark. Dent then summoned Marshal
Jams'nnd, with the other parsons,
made a diligent search for the negro,
but he was nowhere to be found.
