Extensive Work on Rainbow U.

erection of a concentrator and perhaps
a leaching plant, Manager H. Bantield
of the Rainbow Mining, Milling &
Smelting company, in Douglas county,
has suspended underground develojj
nient. H. W. Banlield, son of the man
ager and superintendent at the time,
came to the city yesterday and Is regis
tered at the Imperial. His mission when
he left the mine was in Denver, but de
velopments since his departure recalled
him there a few days before continuing
to the Colorado city,
Mr. Banlield says that the total de
velopment now completed on the Rain
bow aggregates more than 5,000 feet.
This work has been concentrated on
one location, and on a plan of perma
nent operations. Six adit levels 100
feet apart have been established, and
drifts extended on the Rainbow main
ore shoot.
Mr. Bantield says that blocking has
been quite thorough, and that the re
serve in sight is ample for the work of
a large mill.
A force of eight men was engaged
underground until last Thursday. They
were in the lower level, where the
vein is widening materially. The face
of this drift gives backs of approxi
mately 1,000 feet, and as the drift ex
tends into the hill, increases dopth
rapidly. Under the apex of the hill be
yond present work the depth will be
1,200 to 1,500 feet.
The Rainbow has essentially a copper
ore, gold values being present in most
copper and improving with depth. For
the tlrst 200 feet oxidation is very thor
ough, and In this one excellent values
of both gold and copper were opened
Sulphide and copper pyrites come in
on all the lower levels and show
marked uniformity. Vein Ulling is a
schist impregnated with quartz, the
latter carrying the metal content. Sev
eral mining men have examined the
Rainbow of lato, which is the pioneer
In its immediate vicinity, and Mr. Ban
lield eays they pronounce It one of the
largest copper propositions opened In
the state.
The group consisting of nine claims,
is situated on Drew creek, a tributary
of the South Umpqua. The Umpqua
o tiers abundant power, estimates indi
cating that 5,000 horse power may be
had within five to six miles of the mine
There is water in Drew creek for a
concentrator.
Mr. Bantield, Jr. believes all will be
arranged for this improvement early
in the spring, at which time it is the
purpose to re-open full blast, mining
and milling on a large scale.

H. J-Pullen, the mining engineer
who spent several weeks looking over
western Oregon and made headquarters
here during that period, has taken a
mining property on the South Umpqua,
Douglas county, 10 miles above Per
due. Mr. Pullen is in charge, and is
understood to be arranging for
thorough development, " Relatively
little work has been done on the group,
but the surface prospecting shows a
large vein 40 to 00 feet wide, with a
quartz gangue and free values. The
ellort of the new manager will be to
open this big vein at a depth, after
which equipment will be In order If

It is not very often that the theater
goers of Rose burg have an opportunity
of witnessing such a meritorious pro
duction us the well-known Russian
melodrama, For Her Sake, which will
be put on at the Roseburg Theatre
Tuesday, Oct. 25tb.
This play, which is excellently staged
and presented by a company that has
won the ad mi ration and applause of the
discriminating public, portrays life in
the Czar's domains with wonderful viv
idness It is a remarkable fact that
although the average mitraveled Amer
ican Is tolerably familiar with the na
tional customs and character of nearly
all the people of the world a knowl
edge which, by the way, he has obtained
by reading novels, and seeing plays
whose scenes are laid in foreign coun
tries, his idea of Russian life is contined
to the despotism of the government, the
subjection of the people and the exag-1
gerated strength of the armament.
Therefore such dramas as For Her
Sake have as genuine and distinct an
educational value as the historical
drama or novel, especially when the
picture is as accurately aud carefully
drawn as that of this play. This fact,
combined with the simple beauty of the
story, the bright and clever dialogue,
